Out of state ticket over the holidays

I'm a california driver, but was in tennessee over the holiday. I got a speeding ticket. (for only 9 mph over the limit...ugh).

Do i need to pay it?

Will my insurance go up?

Nope. The law says that you have 100% diplomatic immunity if you commit a crime in another state. I drive 105mph minimum when I'm out of state.

Either that or they will issue a warrant.

Edit: I can't believe how stupid you are if you don't know the answer to this. Your DL should be revoked just for asking.

Of course you do. Most states share driving record information. It's not worth it getting into more trouble.

I once got two tickets in 45 minutes driving from FL to DE coming back from spring break. One in VA and one in NC...I said f it and wasn't going to pay them. Both came back, my NJ license was suspended, I had to pay the ticket fees plus late fees and license reinstatement fees to NJ and both showed up on my insurance.

I would fight it (especially if you were really only 9 over, not you were 20 over and the cop wrote it up for 9 over) but you have to do something, don't just let it go. Either pay or fight.

No you definitely don't have to pay it. Everyone who tells you otherwise is just a holier-than-thou anti-speeding type who wants you to pay a ticket that you don't have to pay. How would California ever find out? It's not like they have computers in Tennessee.

here's the reason i asked (and thanks for all the bullshit answers...i'm not a bad driver, it was like 9 at night in the back country of tennesse where there were NO other drivers and i was barely speeding)-

some things i read say that your insurance goes up only if you pay (they find out) but that not all states share that information and it may be in your interest NOT to pay. jesus some of you are just insane about tickets. You think he was really keeping the peace by giving a 9 mph speeding ticket with no cars out? No, he's just sitting there knowing that anyone driving there will be speeding and make 100 bucks for the county. how is that so just?

9 mph over is pretty fast. Especially if its dark and your on unfamiliar country roads.

No, you don't have to pay it. You don't have to pay anything. And Tennessee doesn't have to kick your ass in the future, but they will!

I second this.

Personal responsibility really isn't that complicated. You sped. You got caught, you pay the fine and deal with the consequences. Does it suck? yeah of course

well the law is the law... so by breaking it you would be... a criminal?

you obey the law until you get elected to office and get it changed.

haha you bet!

my boss just got a 700 dollar ticket from a speeding ticket he got in another state in the 80s. last year the state decided to share driver records with michigan and bam, he got nailed with a ton of late fees.

you knew the speed limit and you ignored. You made a choice to ignore a law you feel is arbitrary. This is fine - free will is still alive and well in this country. However, actions have consequences and yours is a fat fine.

Not paying will probably come back to haunt you eventually, but again you can choose to not pay. Free will is a wonderful thing, but self righteousness doesn't absolve you from consequences.

You only have to pay it if you ever plan on going back to Tennessee in your life.

Not really. I went the same route after getting a ticket in Texas. I was unemployed shortly after getting home and money was tight.

Who wants to go back there anyway?
It's fun to have a warrant for my arrest in Texas!

But eventually they will report it to your state, so I paid it a year later with lots of additional late fees and court costs.

Well, 9 over is more than 10% and considering it was unfamiliar roads at night I'd say that its hardly nothing (9 over is the point at which a lot of troopers around here will pull you over for just speeding).

As for bullshit answers, ask a stupid question and get stupid answers. See, now if you would've pointed out you wanted to know if you should pay it for insurance reasons, then people might have been more understanding, instead you act like you shouldn't have to pay it since it was only 9 over, like that isn't a crime.

No one commented on your speeding until you made this post. 😕 I don't care if you were going 9 mph over the limit, but I do think you're a dumbass for thinking you don't need to pay the ticket.

Your are dumb for getting a ticket. Tennessee state troopers have been known to be bribed by ham and whiskey. Or if you are a porn star you can give sexual favors. I am not making this stuff up. In a hurry and I can't google links.

hahahahahahha

its Tennesee you dumbass! NOTHING is going to happen to you. well you can't go back to tennesee but why the fuck would you want to.

Does an out of state speeding ticket go on my record?

Generally speaking the traffic ticket will be reported back to your home state and points will be placed against your driver's license just as if you received the ticket in your home state. Do not believe the officer that tells you there will be no points on your license so just send in the money. He has no idea of the law in your home state. There are numerous exceptions so you need to contact the DMV in your state to verify the effect of an out of state speeding ticket. For example, a North Carolina driver who exceeds the speed limit by 15+ will have their license suspended. Pennsylvania, New York, and Colorado will not post out of state speeding tickets to your record.

You wouldn't have had to if everything wasn't computer based. Back in the day it would have probably been easy to get away with, but not anymore. Try it.

And they would have to post bail, if from out of state, for the amount of the fine.
