Out of shape but not really fat... Where to get started?

Alright.. I've come to the realization that I am a lot more out of shape than I thought. I'm not really fat, but I definitely need to tone up a good bit.

My first inclination is to join a gym (either Golds or the YMCA) primarily in order to get a personal trainer because I'm really not sure where to get started. I have a nice set of Olympic weights (with bench/incline/leg press machine) but that's it..

Thoughts? Is there a good regimen online to follow or am I better off finding a personal trainer?

Read the fat loss sticky (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=162171) for a fairly detailed explanation of everything you need to do. Personal trainers are dominantly untrained and unknowing of what's best for an individual. Often times, their certifications require 3-6 months of light education. I wouldn't trust them, especially if I were just getting into it. Read the sticky, research the stuff, follow it to a T, and leave your pride at the door.

Alright... I'll do some reading before signing up for anything.

One problem is that most guides are geared towards fat loss, which I am not interested in..

The sticky will teach you the fundamentals to dieting and training. If you don't want to start on a fat loss diet then you just need to apply what you read to a bulking phase with a calorie surplus.
