"Out of Resources" error when deleting large number of files

Whenever I delete a large number of files (over 1,000) I get "90 percent or more of your system resources are in use. Close some programs to free system resources. If you do not, your computer may stop responding" after it's done deleting. Then the window I was using freezes for about a minute and the computer starts to take a long time to do stuff after that until I reboot. I've already upgraded all my drivers, firmwares, and BIOS. I've switched PCI slots as stated in the Tech Support checklist among the other things listed there and still nothing. Any ideas or solutions to my problem?

Win98SE
Epox 8kta3+ MoBo
Athlon 1.1 GHz
Antec PP-303XP PS
Radeon VE AGP Vid Card
Pinnacle PCTV Pro TV card in PCI 4
DLink DFE-530TX+ NIC in PCI 3
On Board Audio
Generic DVD Rom on Primary IDE set to Master
Iomega ZipCD CD Burner on Secondary IDE set to Master
IBM Deskstar 60 Gig 60GXP on HighPoint Primary UIDE on board RAID controller set to Master (this is my boot drive)
Seagate Barricuda IV 60 Gig on HighPoint Secondary UIDE on board RAID controller set to Master (just installed a few days ago.)
Generic Fry's 256 MB PC133 RAM

I've had the system for about 6 months now and haven't noticed this problem before, but I'm not sure if I've ever tried deleting so many files at one time before I got the new HD, so I'm not sure if this is a new problem or one that I just didn't know existed. I'm hoping it's just a limitation of win98, but I didn't find anything on the MS site.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

what is happening is you are using most of the memory available to do this process, try doing it in safe mode, or try deleting fewer ammounts at a time.

You are running out of resources/RAM, but if you can successfully complete the proess and then just have problems with things running slow, you may also want to try finding a program that will "recycle" your used RAM and allocate it back for system use. I am currently using a program called AntiCrash from DachshundSoftware.com. It's not free, but I believe you can download it and evaluate it before determining whether you should register the program. It includes a program called Windows Washer that:

"...is a unique technology that will defragment your RAM and keep it defragmented durably.

Unlike other software that will indeed recover a lot of RAM but immediately lose it again because the system reclaims it, Windows Washer will durably defragment and optimise your RAM."

You also have the option of flushing your Windows swap file when running this program. The utility has intercepted a few program crashes here and there and allows safe recovery so you can save your data and such. I've been using it for a couple of months, I guess, and I think it is working well. YMMV.

You might be filling the allocated space in your Recycle Bin unless you hold down Shift when hitting delete.
