Our trip to the Faroe Islands and Copenhagen

Hvannhagi hike Suduroy Island - the most Faroese of Faroe hikes we did IMO

Despite the complications from international travel during what may turn out to be a very brief window this was an absolutely incredible trip and one of the best we've ever taken. For much of the year the only flights to the Faroe Islands were from Copenhagen so we decided to do a couple of days in the Danish capital before heading on. I would also highly recommend the Skt Petri hotel should you find yourself in the area.

Who wouldn't want to kayak to a floating bar?

Tough to tell from this direction but the left side of the building is angled out and I couldn't help but think of a fancier sandcrawler

Tivoli (No not that Tivoli) - I was pleasantly surprised with the park. Well organized with lots of things to see and do

To try and still be able to keep our distance from people a bit I burned a stack of miles on business class flights. The Lounge access ended up being a better than expected benefit as the lounges allowed much more space to spread out and were comparatively empty compared with the various concourses we traversed. No new aircraft for me but one new airline: SAS. Flights and crews were fine but product and policy wise I'd try to fly someone else if available. One interesting note was that we flew on 3 planes that were less than 1 year old. One had only about a months worth of flying on it.

The Lufthansa A350-900 instead of the 747-900 originally booked. Mediocre seat I've flown before but decent service and food considering the pandemic

I wish more planes had nose cameras

Way cool. Visiting the Shetland Islands is one of those "bucket list" things for me...that, sadly, I'll never be able to do.

Right on time with this post .... needed some new wallpaper! 😉

We generally had great weather so I think we got some great pictures. I don't think there was a single day that didn't have numerous incredibly dramatic and beautiful landscapes

Sorry to hear you won't be able to go. Although at this rate the people who get to go might be a shrinking group

Never really gave any thought to the Shetlands specifically but the pics are really cool. (currently that first wide-screen shot is adorning my desktop)

I suspect my traveling for the next year or two is going to be limited mostly to places I can drive myself unfortunately... I'm not getting on a plane by choice for awhile.

The Faroe Islands are a group of 18 islands between Iceland, Scotland and Norway (northwest of the Shetland islands). Several of the islands are connected by tunnel or bridge while you need to take a helicopter or ferry to the others. The islands are well known for their consistent weather including fog and frequent but short rain storms. As such we left appropriately kitted out with water proof jackets, pants and extra shoes and socks.

As we approached the islands everyone in the entire plane plastered their faces against the window. The plane was only about half full so several people moved seats to be able to see out the window. I've been on a lot of flights, including to several other island chains but I have never seen so many people glued to the windows at once. Not that I spent much time looking around as my face was plastered to my own window

We quickly taxied to the smallest commercial international airport I've ever seen with just two gates. And as we walked down the stairs and onto the tarmac there were no safety lines guiding passengers. Which makes sense because the next flight wasn't for several hours. And while I normally hate checking a bag (we had to because of our hiking poles and aforementioned additional clothing) it took all of 5 minutes for the to start the conveyor belt

Because of the unpredictable weather we had less of a daily itinerary and more of a 'Things we want to do in this area of the Islands". It could be sunny in one area of the island and you drive through a short mountain tunnel into dense fog and rain on the other side of the mountain. This incredibly dense fog rolled in the evening of our first day there so we didn't get much done beyond some earlier by the road sightseeing, checking into our AirB&B and grocery shopping. The next day more than made up for the previous day's weather though as we headed to Saksun - a bustling metropolis of 17 people. Despite the small size they had surprisingly nice, if a bit hidden, public bathrooms - an appreciated trend we would find across the islands

Op did make it back home so that is a plus.

I had a giant bruise across my right kidney when I got home so....

Hopefully my fellow Danes has treated you well. 🙂

My settlement agreement requires I state the following: I had a nice time and encountered no issues

😀 Kidding - had a great time in your wonderful country and, with one exception*, the locals were great

*We were at the liquor store in Klaksvik and a man double parked his car behind ours as we were coming out. He totally ignored me as I tried to get him to turn around to move his car and his wife, in the car, turned her head to ignore my presence as I tried to pantomime the fact that I could no longer move my car. He came back ~5min later fortunately, having completed his errand. The most infuriating thing was there was an open parking spot about 15' away. But you can run into older IDGAF people everywhere

As long as it was on the Faroe Islands 😛

Awesome. It was after I read your first post about this that I got the bug and booked Maui starting next week. I just upgraded my phone and got one with a 48MP camera.

I'm hoping to get some pictures to share. Eventually, we'll probably hit some European destinations, but waiting another year or so before we do it.

Been to Copenhage twice and would 100% go again, 1 a/b city I ever been to, everything is fantastic(and expensive) even Carlsberg taste better there. I have been to all the places OP went and can confirm they're as pretty as in pic.

Faroe Island is always on my radar, OP what's the damage for the trip to Faroe?

Yeah...it's a business trip we can write off. The cancellation policy was a month in advance non-refundable....unlike the tourist cancellation policies which are far more forgiving.

Airfare would be a bit pricier than most western Europe destinations. Copenhagen doesn't have as many flights from the US as the UK, France, Amsterdam etc and then you need to get to the Faroe Islands from there. They did open up flights from Iceland shortly before we got there so that may have helped since there are more US-KEF flight options. The rental car was expensive. But most things are outdoors and free so that offsets a lot of that and our airfare was $300 total with points. Food was about 4x as expensive as home but SE MI is pretty dang cheap for groceries and restaurants so probably only 2x-3x for most people. Lodging was reasonable - we paid about $140/night at two places that had a bedroom, living room, full kitchen and washer. Ferries are subsidized by the government so they are cheap. $35 for a 4 hour RT ferry for 2 people + car seems pretty darn reasonable.

The one thing that constantly gets my attention when looking at places like this...

WHERE ARE THE FUCKING TREES?
There are a couple of small plantations on a few of the islands but yeah otherwise treeless

I read that Iceland used to have lots - not sure if it is forest lots - of trees but Vikings chop it all down to build.

So in your option Faroe worth a trip? I have been to Iceland so I thing I have some idea what Faroe would looks like..

The next day we headed to the Fossa waterfall. You can actually walk up a trail and get to the second level of the waterfall and stand behind it. The water level wasn't as high as it normally was but the trade off was that meant better weather for us.

In the lower right you can see what often passes for a trail. A single foot width's wide sheep path

Then it was on to Oyndarfjordur and Gjogv.

Beautiful. Faroe isles are another place have I long wanted to visit (if only because it feels like one-up on visiting the Scottish highlands and islands). Had to settle for a "Google Streetview tour" though.

Nearly went to Copenhagen once, but had to cancel due to illness.
