Our firm announced bonuses! YAY!

That's measured in Rupees. I.E. like $1K, USD. About .00001% of the US working population gets a $30K bonus their first year. No matter a lawyer, accountant, engineer, pole smoking hooker, etc.

I still can't fathom why lawyers get paid so much. I mean really, they read a bunch of books with legal history and laws/statutes and then argue about it on behalf of people/organizations. What about that warrants 6 or 7 figure salaries and bonuses equal to what the average American makes in a year. Let's be honest here. Our founding fathers permitted people to represent themselves by law, which tells me that they considered the job simple enough for even the most ignorant criminal that could stand before a judge and argue/explain their situation and actions.

not all lawyers make this kind of money, there are tons of so called "ambulance chasers" that dont do as well or just similar to the average us people

Just BEING a lawyer is hard work. Law school is very tough and competitive as well, you are ranked vs other students in your class. if you are not in the top 10 or 20 then pretty much say good bye to being hired at the top law firms.

After u graduate, u need to pass the BAR exam, which is also not a walk in the park. You need to do this for each state u want to practise law in..

being a lawyer is hard, and I believe the op is one of the top percentile lawyers

Not a goddamn thing. Aside from actually quoting the TRUE book/chapter/verse (like some skullfuckked bible dude or something) I can argue anything with anyone at anytime. I'll make up what I don't know and speak like I know what I'm talking about!!! <--that's what lawyers do. It's all about convincing the jury. Nothing else matters.

My brother's best friend is a Commercial Law attorney or something liek that. He can quote workman's compensation law and such...yet he has no idea where his cable modem is supposed to plug into the wall. Ironic, no?

Thank you, Mister McDonald Fry Cook. Someday when I have the Grease Monitoring Skills that you do, I'll rise to your lofty position. STFU.

Everyone can be a doctor or a lawyer, they just choose not to, and instead berate them for their lack of capabilities or ease of job. Get a life.

The store manager at the place I work gets a ~$10,000 end of year bonus..total bonuses throughout the year are probably at least $30k..

Another BS thread.

This articles speaks about a firm called Weil Gotshal. Its not the firm I work at, but all firms in NYC match each other's bonus. This article was from 2002. In that recession year the bonus structure was $15,000 to $40,000. During a recession. Things are better now. 🙂

We work our ASSES off, just so you know. In the last two weeks I billed 150 hours, meaning I billed 75 hours a week. Billed. That doesn't include the time I couldn't bill which is another 20 hours of heating, going to the bathroom, travelling to work, etc. I stayed 40 hours in a row at one point for the closing of a deal.

College is hard work. The additional study for any profession is hard work. In this day and age, people tend to immortalize lawyers b/c they "generate money for me." Not so. Lawyers are skilled lottery players. The lottery being the United States Legal System. If you are more knowledgeable in your particular field than the opposing lawyer, you win. No different than wiring a house, building a computer or mixing concrete.

What about my post invokes your assumption that I'm jealous? I simply don't understand it. It seems to me that over the years lawyers have "commercialized" the law and the original intent of the practice to make millions of dollars doing a realtively simply thing. I'm sorry, but it can't be that hard to convince 12 people from all walks of life one way or the other on most things. The system has been bastardized by profit and sensationalism.

Case in point. I am a network administrator. I read tons of books, articles, studies, white papers, etc. every day. People come to me and tell me things are one way when they are really another. I contest their assertions based on my knowledge gained from the things I've read and memorized or by researching further. What's the difference?
