If you have a 3GB Mobile Share plan, yes.
o
So adaway wontreduce the data usage and it was just someone else on the plan using the data. Thinking about exchaning moto x for a one m8 to root so I can use a adwayto reduce the data usage. Will adaway make a difference? Might just keep the moto x if adaway won't make a difference

2 or 3GB of cellular data is a decent amount. That's assuming you are not watching HD videos or using iCloud to backup/sync your iDevices over cellular. When I had unlimited plan on 3 phones over 2 years, our max was 1.8GB and that only happened twice.

This site runs horribly on a phone

Why don't you use Tapatalk to browse the forums instead? You can disable all of the things you are asking about (avatars, images, topic images, etc.) directly from the app settings. Doesn't require root or ad blockers. And everything is nicely formatted for a smart phone screen size.

you can use as much as you want... you'll just get billed for the excess (combination of everyone) that goes above 3GB (or whatever your plan is)

Grandfathered unlimited plans (from ATT/Verizon), unlimited plans (from Sprint/T-mobile) and T-mobile (data throttled to 2G when you go over) are the only ones from the big 4 that don't have overage fees. You can also look at certain MVNOs too

I was told that it was the ads that are eating up data. I was told wrong?

You were not told wrong necessarily. For sure the ads are consuming data. More accurately, everything you are displaying on your screen when browsing forums is consuming data. That includes things like avatar images, embedded images in posts, side bar links and general web page elements. All of those things (and more) are eating data every time you visit any web page. If you think simply blocking ads is going to result in very low data usage I believe you will be disappointed.

A program like Tapatalk is designed to take an information dense page, like most forums, and condense that information into more manageable bites. You can choose to not display all of the avatars and embedded images. The web page itself isn't displayed, just the thread text and headers. In fact, you can choose to only view threads you are subscribed to if you wish. Or only new threads, etc. All of this is made with mobile devices in mind and is much lighter on data consumption as well as much easier to read on a small screen.

Try using the tools available to you before (a) buying a new phone and (b) rooting and installing ad blockers to only address one minor area of data consumption.

Browsing websites doesn't use that much data. Adaway won't really help. If you really wanted to remove ads, you could just install firefox and it allows extensions (adblock) just like on the desktop version. No root required.

Don't you have wifi almost everywhere you go? Most of my usage is from youtube/spotify. I don't think chrome accounts for much of my usage.

Mobiwol did not work out?

It works perfectly for separating the usage between apps between wifi and data but I originally thought the web browser was still using data from ads when I'm browsing
