That brings back bad memories! When I was about 12, we were visiting an uncle for the weekend, he lived in an old Victorian style house with those really steep staircases. The stairs were made of some hard wood they kept a nice sheen on using hard wood polish.

I slept upstairs and started to come down the next morning in my socks, I got to the second step and WEEEE! my feet slid right out from under me. I came down hard, hit my spine, knocked the wind out of me, then tumbled the rest of the way down with a big thud at the end. I couldn't breathe at all, it was as though I had exhaled completely on impact, then my trachea collapsed or something. I just kept trying to inhale but couldn't.

Of course the whole family was gathered around me by the time I started turning blue, everyone was panicking, someone dialed 911. Hell I was even panicking, because I couldn't breathe, that is a terrifying feeling.

So after what seemed like an eternity, but was probably only like two minutes or less, I was finally able to inhale and exhale a little. By the time EMS came I was fine, laughing about it all. My back hurt like hell but I was otherwise fine.

Heh. I broke my collar bone (the first time) sliding down hardwood stairs on throw rug when I did't quite stick the landing. :)
