Ouch, I lost $2K worth of equipment and all my pics

So I was on my way home from vacation in London on Sunday, and I accidently left my camera bag on the Underground train as I was getting off at the airport. I realized it as soon as the train doors closed, so I ran to the ticket window to ask them to stop the train. When they checked the train though the camera bag was already gone. Stupid mistake on my part, I know ... an expensive one at that.

Inside my bag was over $2K worth of stuff ... (Canon Digital Rebel, Apple Ipod (40GB), 2GB, 1GB, and 128MB CF Memory cards, Belkin Media Reader for iPod, spare battery etc). That doesn't even include losing over 1000 pictures that I took in London, which is the real loss here. The camera and ipod can be replaced, but the pictures I took can never be replaced.

I've been hopeful that a good soul would turn the bag into the London Transportation Lost Packages, but it does not sound very hopeful at this point.

My insurance said they wouldn't cover it either because it was "lost" and not stolen. I filed a police report today anyways just incase.

Anyways, I'm majorly bummed ... but I'm also in the market for a new Digital SLR camera, since I need one to replace my Rebel. Sucks that I have to drop another $1000+ on a camera since the Rebel was brand new, but I guess on the bright side I can "upgrade" to a better camera... Anyone have any suggestions? The 20D and the D70 are on my list right now. I dunno if I can justify the extra $300 that the 20D costs over the D70, especially considering discounts on the D70 are occuring while the 20D seems to even be marked up sometimes. Maybe someone knows of a deal on a good SLR camera? 🙂

Holy crap, somebody hit the jackpot with that bag.

But that sucks =(

Well, I'm trying to file a claim that way with my insurance. But since I already told them that I left the bag on the train, I'm not sure if they'll consider it "lost" and not "stolen". I could have probably been dishonest and just said it was stolen to begin with, but I didn't know the insurance wouldn't cover a lost bag. I'm not really hopeful that they'll cover it at this point ... but I'm still going to try.

Yeah ... you can say that again. The worst part was, it was on my trip back home, so I packed all of the chargers and everything into it too. So whoever found the bag got everything they needed.

Thanks for everyone's support. I'm not really keeping up much hope in finding the camera anymore ... I would really love to get all of my pictures back, but I doubt it will happen unfortunately.

Any suggestions or deals for cameras (Digital SLR and around the 1000-1500 price range)? I saw a few deals on iPods earlier, so I'm hoping I'll be able to replace my iPod this Christmas.

That sucks man, my condolences. I was getting upset at myself for losing 50 bucks yesterday. I know how it goes. Maybe someone'll start a blog about finding your pictures and post one a day.

I would say hahah, but we all make mistakes, im sorry to hear this, they are both awesome toys.
<--30 gig ZEN xtra and G2 owner.... 🙁

20D > * unless you can afford the 1d MKII or the 1ds MKII. Your choice. But the 20D is far superior to the D70 when comparing ISO shots. ISO3200 = VERY USABLE.

Yeesh...sorry to hear that man. I don't know how you do it, but if I had $2K in a bag with me, I'd practically handcuff that thing to my arm. 🙂

Yeah, definitely a lesson learned there ... I usually keep the bag strapped to me, but on the train ride back home I set it in my lap and then without thinking I put it on the seat next to me when I had to catch my luggage which kept falling over ... Bad error on my part and is something I'll never do again.
