OUCH! I just got my first flu shot...

I just got back from my doctor and got my first flu shot ever. I am a wusse when it comes to things like that but i was sick of getting sick at least twice a year and wanted to do something about it.

Aside from my arm hurting, it was not bad at all, but will it really work?

I come in contact with a lot of people everyday and i am wondering if it will really ward off the flu this winter.

Did you get a flu shot? Do you ever? Does it work?

Well, for some people, they will really get sick once getting the flu shot. Basically it boils down to the fact you are getting a live strain from the flu that is expected to be floating around this season. It effects people differently though.

It all boils down to your immune system.

We always get them done in our office. I've had one for the last 7 years and not missed 1 day for being sick. My mom's a teacher and swears by them.

FWIW, last year I was the only person on my team that got the flu shot. And I was the only person on the team who didn't get sick.

I got it again this year and haven't been sick yet *crossess fingers*.

It's not fool proof, but I think the 30 seconds it takes to have it done and the day of arm soreness aftwarwards outweigh the risk of possibility being bedridden with Influenza A for a week like I was a few years ago when I *didn't* get the flu shot.

yes... i don't mean full-out coughing, sore throat, but do come down with it pretty bad at least once

IMO if you're healthy and don't work someplace where you're surrounded by sick people, you don't need it. I've never had one and I got the flu once in the past 7 years, and it lasted less than 24 hours.

I got one once and I didn't notice a difference.

I rarely ever get sick without the shot. I really can't remember the last time I was ill with anything more than a sore throat or the sniffles.

I got the flu the year I got the shot, so I have been staying away from it and haven't had it again. It's been over 5 years now.

Which arm did you get the injection in?

My wife was told her right arm would be best as she's right handed?

I get one every year. In fact, I just got my flu shot today too.

I haven't had the flu in years.

Not to be critical but he's lying.
Thats how it works.
It gives you the flu so you can be immune to it later.
Nevermind that crap about it being dead.
Influenza is a virus. Viruses (virii?) dont fit the technical definition of life. They cant be dead.
For the same reason be suspicious if you have a virus and you get prescribed anti-biotics.

As for its effectiveness, I seem to avoid the flu entirely if I avoid the shot.
Every year I had the shot I got sick immediately from it and was also sick later on.
When I managed to sneak out of it I was fine the whole winter.

Also, its November. He gave it to you too damn late anyway.
It should be given in late summer or early fall so your body can actually cope with it and be ready for the winter. When its this late I prefer to just take chances and be sick naturally.
Both concepts work on the same premise: You have the disease once so the body can build an immunity and not get it again later.

I think the whole concept of yearly flu shots is a scam. Especially because I know darn well that one little tube cant possibly make you immune to all 2000 strains.

I would think the same. However my wife was told to get it in the arm which is the most active. That also makes sense.

I have only gotten a flu shot twice in my entire life, and both resulted in the only times that I was ever ill with the flu.

I'll pass.

People normally feel a little achy the day after getting the flu shot, or at least have here at work when they give them out. I don't get them simply for that reason alone.

Even the CDC website said you will not get sick with it after...
well, i will let you guys know if i get sick from it or not.
:)
i got it now because i usually get sick later in the winter... plus, when we go on our cruises, there are tons of people sick, and no matter how much you wash your hands, you get sick. i am hoping this prevents it.

we shall see though! :)

Your arm gets sore because you have fluid displaced in the muslces in your arm from the shot. When you have fluid build up it causes pressure. Pressure leads to pain. Same concept as swollen joints and fluid under finger/toe nails hurting like a b!tch.

You get the choice in arms because if you have one that you move more than the other, you want to do it with the least discomfort. So it makes sense to get the shot in the off arm.
