Cliffs:
1. Next gen xbox is rumored to require a constant online connection (for DRM probably).
2. MS creative director Adam Orth (aka Sweet Billy) comes out defending the always online feature and trolling everyone from small towns to game developers by saying to #Dealwithit along with other quips.
3. The issue blows up on him, he takes back his statements as jokes.
4. MS cans him.

His analogies...

His back and forth with a game developer.

I don't think MS fired him, just apologized for his comments saying they didn't represent those of the company.

I guess it's still unconfirmed.
Update: 1:40pm

Sources are telling 4Player that Adam Orth is no longer working for Microsoft. Currently tracking this down further...

...we've confirmed this with one reliable source but not two, and Orth's linkedin has currently shown no movement. We're considering this a high possibility but it currently lacks enough verification for us to confirm at this time.

Sadly, you don't even have to go further than this forum to see many people who think the same way as him. People don't realize there are more things outside of their little bubble.

If they can justify it so be it, but having it that way 'just cause' isn't a reason and will bite them in the ass. Some people like to take consoles on travels....apparently they are too shortsighted to see that. Or how about the fact that if my internet IS out...I tend to play my consoles. Yea...it's such a grand idea 😛

It doesn't matter though, the arena has changed, and people are already ok with it.

Even my PS3 pisses me off because I don't play it often, but I still wait for updates when I do get on, because there is no alternative.

Even my phone, sometimes it's slow just making a phone call because it's downloading a bunch of shit I don't need.

It's the world we wanted, always dialed in and live. Now we have it.

Where it makes sense, it makes sense. Where it doesn't, it doesn't. I haven't had a console connected to the internet since the Dreamcast, and have no plans to. An option? Sure. A requirement? No thanks.

Granted, all this is still speculative, he very well could have been trolling.

The point is more people want always online gaming than don't so it's hard to argue that from a business perspective. These companies want to make money, they aren't going to design games around the minority that want offline gaming.

I think "want always online gaming" is an overstatement. Want the OPTION to play online with ease is what they want, but yes you are correct about the business side.

The first time MS's network goes down and no one can play their Nextbox games...you don't think that's going to bring armageddon?

It's happened with PSN a few times, I remember a 2 or 3 day outage on playstation when they had that account breach. They give you free games for it, everyone is happy.

I know, it's bullshit, but it's the world we live in and I don't see it changing.

meh I think it's a dangerous move, kids don't always have access to internet, or maybe that changed?

The kind of customer they want to appeal to lives in the suburbs and almost always has electricity and internet. Thats where the steady money is.

They dont give a shit about bumhole, Kansas or the crappy broken tenements in Queens.

LOL, I have been to Janesville Wisconsin, and it SUCKS ASS. The Dollar General there by the burger king especially sucks.

As for OP: Don't really care because consoles are more or less dead to me.

2-3 DAY outage?

"The PlayStation Network had an outage which began on April 20, 2011"
"On May 14, 2011, Sony began regionally restoring the PlayStation Network"

He has been with MS barely over a year and should STFU. Look at his LinkedIN profile -- maybe it is common for game designers to jump around (not sure), but he doesn't seem to last long at places.

Big difference. PSN is used to deliver updates, download purchased content, and for social interaction. The rumor about the next Xbox makes it sound like you can't play the game disks you purchased if your Internet connection goes down (or you don't have broadband). Not just when starting the game either - sounds like there will be a check periodically and the game will stop if your connection is out. That is exactly the DRM scheme that pisses off a majority of PC gamers.

IIRC, I couldn't play during this time because there was a mandatory ps update which couldn't download because of the outage. At the very least I remember not being able to watch Netflix, which at this point is the only reason I turn my ps3 on.

It kept saying there was a download, but then couldn't connect to psn.

I know it's not exactly the same, but it's a direction it's been heading for a while now.

I played a bunch of games during that outage. I just turned off my PS3's wifi and away I went.

So I couldn't play online, big deal. I don't want to play online, because the majority of people online are shitheads anyway.

I used to think "Need internet? Meh not a big deal". I've been living in Rome, Italy for the past 4 months, internet goes out about 2-3 times day.

I didn't even think this would work (by design) without somehow detaching your psn account first. I remember a lot of people creating new accounts and not registering them around the time of the outage to get around this.

I'll have to try this later, because if it does work, I'll leave it off until I need it. It might save me from needing to download 15 minutes of updates to play a game for an hour. Since I hardly ever play it there are always updates waiting for me.

Well according to the reddit guy, he got canned from Fox Interactive for being a douchebag. But he was able to land a gig at MS so he must be good at what he does or good at promoting himself.

I looked at his Linkedin... he hasn't worked anywhere for more than two years, he's been at MS going on two so it's probably about time.
