I was at the game last night, but didn't see the impact.

Durham, N.C. ? A 7-month-old baby boy was recovering at Duke Medical Center on Friday, one day after a foul ball hit him in the head at a Durham Bulls baseball game.

Jacob Wellvang is in good condition, hospital officials said Friday. He was in the picnic area near the left field line when he was hit, according to a Bulls spokesman.

No other information was released.

The Durham Bulls team is owned by WRAL's parent company, Capitol Broadcasting.

Anyone here ever been hit while at the ballpark?

Wow. Glad he's going to be OK

You'd think someone would be near to the baby to either catch the ball or at least cover the kid up as the ball is heading your way... don't know the layout of the ball park but the story seemed to imply they were beyond the outfield in foul territory so I'm sure there was plenty of time to react.

Err, I wouldn't be taking a 7 month old to a baseball game and sit in an area susceptible to foul balls.

When I was a kid, we had seats for the NJ Devils about 10 rows back behind one of the goals. We always got to the game early to watch the warm-ups, where they basically shoot dozens of pucks at the goal. With so many pucks flying all over the place, you don't really pay attention to which one is going where, and being a kid I was bored and kind of spaced out. One puck hit the crossbar and went nearly straight up. It went HIGH. For some reason I looked up, and I managed to see the black puck fluttering against the dark brown ceiling of the arena - the practice pucks have no markings on them, they're entirely black. I dove out of my seat just in time. The puck came down and landed right on the back of my seat, flipping the seat cushion up. Some other kid tried to reach down from the row behind and grab the puck, but I got it.

We shared season tickets with a couple of other families, and one of my friends did get hit by a puck when his family was at a game. They took him downstairs to get checked out, then gave him some free stuff. At a different game he got a chance to go down on the ice and take two shots from center ice to try to win a contest. Lucky bastard. That wasn't related to getting hit by the puck, he was picked at random.

It's from a magazine.

Don't know which one.

Jesus H Christ! Who the fuck brings a 7 month old to a baseball game? :|

I took my son to an Angels game a couple summers ago when he was 5 and I was constantly on the lookout for a stray foul ball coming our way.

I took my son to an Arena League Football game when he was about 4 I think. The seats had been given to me and were great seats, very near midfield about 8 rows from the field. With Arena League, you literally sit at the player's level and you are right on the out-of-bound boundary. You also get to keep the ball if it goes in the stands.

The QB made a poor throw that went right toward my son. I went to cover him up, then the usher very near us reached over to catch it and deflected it down near my son's feet. A guy came diving down from about 4 rows up to get the ball and crashed into my son. It all happened so fast I wasn't real clear at the time what happened but my son was crying. The ushers carried the guy away and apparently he was arrested; my son got shown on the Jumbotron, the owner of the team came over to talk with us and gave us a ball, the lady behind him bought him some Skittles, and a guy bungied down from the ceiling to talk to him and make sure he was okay. After the game the cheerleaders brought him on the field and were playing around with him and he went to get the ball autographed by some of the team. He thought that was the coolest thing that had ever happened to him.

Last night, we sat behind home/third base. We had a nice net up in front of us to block foul balls.

I wouldn't bring a 7-month-old to a game in the first place, but if I were, I'd at least sit behind the net like we did last night.
