Otitis surgery? alternatives? under the knife I go?

I have fluid in my ear tube and have for quite a while. I've had it on and off throughout my life. Virtually any time I went to the doctor when I was sick, as a kid/teen, "Otitis" was always one of the problems.

My mother had an operation when I was young, were they put tubes in her ears.

I don't have medical insurance, and have taken virtually every OTC decongestant type product available. Sudafed 24 has provided me with minimal relief in the past, but no longer works. Walk-in clinics prescribe decongestants and antibiotics (antibiotics works to an extent, but not for very long)..

Since my mother and a childhood friend are really the only exposure I've had to this ear tube procedure, I was wondering, if any of you had it - do you know roughly how much it costs to have done? I've been holding off going to an ear, nose and throat doctor because I'm fairly certain something besides a prescription will be required.

Also, have you heard of anyone receiving an effective alternative treatment? Do you know if it was very costly?

Thank you 🙂

kaiser permanente insurance is ~$114 per month and they cover any operation that is NECESSARY. sign up, go to a doctor, get it taken care of, and once you're ok cancel the insurance.

Is that legal?

i have been "under the knife" more than tim allen in Home Improvement, i don't fear it. They are very careful but things can happen. I cut my thumb off but they did microsurgery and i now have 100% functionality back. I didn't have insurance then either, you can apply for financial assistance to aid with the bills, but i don't regret getting the surgery. I have my thumb back!!!

<< why wouldn't it be? >>

I mean isn't that some form of insurance fraud? Everytime you need expensive surgery, you go buy insurance for a month for $120 to pay for a $4k surgery, then drop it...sounds...wrong. Maybe just morally wrong I dunno. If it was that easy Canadian health care sounds pointless...

Don't know about the cost, but I do know you risk permenant hearing loss is you don't hav it done... Is there a teaching/county hospital nearby?

<< true, but he sounds desperate and doesn't really have many options. >>

Oh oh, no no I didn't mean that he shouldn't do it or anything, I was just asking if it was illegal or the insurance company could put a red flag on a file or something...
