After installing an ECS K7S5A PRO motherboard in my computer, running Win 98SE, Device Manager shows "Other device" and, under it, shows "PCI Universal Serial Bus"; it has an ! in a yellow circle. The Properties panel tells me the drivers for this device are not installed. Yet, Windows can not find a driver. If I removed/delete this item in Device Manager, Windows will detect a new device during the next startup, and I'll have to go through the Add New Hardware procedure again, with Windows unable to find a driver. The only way to avoid this during each startup is to let Windows add the "Other device" to Device Manager.

Other than this, Device Manager shows all other devices to be working properly. How can I get rid of this ! in a yellow circle?

This is the USB 2.0 controller unit. Please browse the MS knowledge base about how to teach W98SE this new trick.

Yesterday, I sent a message to ECS via a support request form on their web site. Received a response today. They are telling me moving my hard drive from my old system to this new motherboard will cause this probelm, and that I need to format drive C and do a fresh install in Windows. I was hoping to avoid that but now I think maybe I should go ahead, do that, then, if I still have the problem, continue researching the issue.

As much as I don't like having to reinstall my apps, it would give me a fresh Registry and would verify whether ECS advice works or not.

They do, but since the USB 2.0 controller on the K7S5Apro is a VIA unit, I'd rather try the driver from VIAarena.com ...

Thanks for that info about the driver from VIAarena.com. Went there, got it, installed it, and the "Other device" disappeared from Device Manager. So, Device Manager is very clean; no question marks indicating unknown devices, no exclamation marks in yellow circles.

The downloaded driver also added VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager.

That's not added, that's your "Other Device" with a name on it. You now have the four rear USB ports running in USB 2.0 style.
