Someone asked in the romulans thread if the aliens tech. is as crappy as ours. That got me thinking... what if they don't even have internet?!?

Think about it, this super-advanced alien race may have developed on a very different path than us and might be amazed at some of the tech we have. Meanwhile, we might be amazed at what they have.

For instance, what if they were a super-peaceful race and never developed nuclear technology and all the things that have come from it?!? Their mind would be blown when they see our shit... even though they are more advanced than us.

I've often thought about this as well. Sure, aliens might have far more advanced technology than us in certain areas, but that doesn't mean they're more advanced in EVERY area.

They supposedly use the mind internet to communicate, no modem required.

Exactly. They maybe have mastered space travel, but don't know shit about cellular technology and communications.

We always assume a lot about aliens and I don't think that is fair.

Aliens may not be very advanced. There may be aliens sitting around on their planet using primitive tools and thinking "Gee, if there were advanced life out there they would have contacted us by now..."

I often thought, what if they're only 50 years ahead of us? That could explain why they keep crashing in deserts and such.

Also keep in mind the (rather boring) possibility that we are (currently) the most advanced race in the universe. Given what we "know" it's about as likely as anything else.

Yeah, we always assume aliens are just going to come, destroy us, and move on.

I wish we had a way to travel in space, FAST.

I think humans are woefully behind in Anal Probing.

That's what San Fransisco is for. It's to help get our numbers up.

Aliens could millions of years ahead of us. Think about it. Small mammals where around at the time of the Dinosaurs. What if dinsaurs had not been wiped out by the giant asteroid? Would they have evolved into a sentient species capable of creating technology?

Hell if humans didn't have the dark ages, we'd be 800 years more advanced right now.

That was an episode of Voyager.

The alternative is that most interstellar civilizations have hit the technological point of convergence a long time ago, something that we haven't even reached yet as a species.

In that regard, we are but as infants. Also we have a lot of amazing technology already that can't be used to it's full effects due to intellectual property and such.

If you look at an ant colony, you don't see workers hoarding stuff to keep away from other ants. Everything that they have is shared amongst the whole colony and the ants do their part. Other alien civilizations could be more like this; imagine if you would, if any of the race invented something, and anybody else could take that idea and change it or improve upon it.

If that was the case, then technology would be leaps ahead of what we have today, since they would be working together to further the species instead of trying to limit what other people have in comparison to yourself, like our current culture. A company can invent something and sit on the patent for 40 years and not allow other companies to produce what they make.

An alien might look at our world and think "WTF - they'll never get ahead like this!" Our technology has advanced like crazy but in terms of society we have sections of the planet that are the equivalent of the stone age in terms of advancement (e.g. look at some of the horrors going on in the Congo right now). I would think that any advanced alien civilization would have several hundred thousand years to play around with things after the point of technological convergence, potentially even millions or billions of years.

To an alien society that was a billion years old, the entire history of humankind would be but a blip in time, a fleeting moment like the light on a candle which could be blown out upon a zephyr of wind. Civilizations that had been around that long could be slower in thought, similar to trees on earth. After all the bigger and more complex AI gets, the slower it gets, so biologically speaking, aliens with giant minds might appear to be thinking in slow motion to us.

I have a hard time seeing an alien race 'master' space travel, by which I assume is FTL/Interstellar, but don't have well developed radio, cellular, or other wireless telecommunications.

Technologies may developer independently of each other, but some need to work together to actually be effective. Hope I explained that adequately.

Yea, that may not have been the best example. How about blu-ray then? They can space travel but don't have quality optical disc storage.

I wanna zoom ahead a million years and see what happens when the cockroaches are in charge.

Except whatever their suitable replacement for cellular technology and communications probably shits all over what we have now, if they have mastered space travel. :p

That's BS thinking. You might want to stop it.

Ants work until they die. They don't have recreational time to satisfy curiosity or make technological discoveries.

Our way is better. :colbert:

Think of how rewarding it would be to introduce an alien culture to the joys of whiskey and gambling!

(assuming biological compatibility)
