They've switched over to Firstsource.com for their sales, so they no longer offer free shipping (and I also think they now charge Tax in CA).

It happened sunday night or yesterday... Too bad they switched to firstsource, looks like they might lose a bunch of california customers... I'd rather shop at staples with their coupons and free personal delivery to my house. Oh well...

This really sucks. I didn't order from Onvia too often, but they were great for PMing Staples
:-(

I'm glad I already got all my heavy stuff from them before the change. I'm in california and it was really nice not to have to pay shipping and 8% tax!

8% tax? What do you people vote for? Give money to all the drug punks and pay for people to have a 1000 children and not work. In Ohio we try to keep that down a little. I pay 5.5% tax.

Probegt21: Living in CA, I feel the pain of a 8% sales tax (8.25% last year), but before you start talking about paying people to use drugs, have a thousand children, and not work, look at the relative size of CA, especially Los Angeles, compared to any major city in OH. I work as a DBA and SA, but I will use a DBA's salary in my examples. These numbers were taken off salary surveys from Kforce.com. The average salary for a DBA in Cinncinnati is 71K, maxing out at 81K, in Cleveland it is 72K, maxing out at 82K. These were the highest numbers of any major city in OH. In comparison, in Los Angeles, the same position averages at 79K, maxing out at 90K. And if you look at San Jose, the average for a DBA is 82K, maxing out at 94K. So you see, although we have a 2.5% higher sales tax than OH, on average, we make an average of 10K per year. That should justify it a bit.

Forget 'when did Onvia start charging for shipping'? The better
question is 'when will Onvia cease to exist'? My guess is: soon,
very very soon. If they weren't making money on the store, what
are the chances they're making money on the B2B junk on their
Website?

They sell most merchandise cheap compared to other sellers.

They were loosing money with free shipping. Plus they had those coupons and people got away with getting the merchandise WAY below cost.

Not only do they now charge for shipping, but their prices are way up also. $250 monitor on Friday is now $285. 45 gig IBM drive is up $20 from Friday. Outpost.com is the best bet now for a free shipping type place.

8.6%? That's plain robbery! I pay 7.75% (now down to 7.5% or 7.25%) and I was thinking that was a bit steep.

Yeah that's too bad... I liked Onvia before they started jacking up the prices and charging shipping... I'm glad I got all my computer parts/coupons taken care of during the summer--they had great customer service too... If it's any consolation, their prices are a little cheaper than getting directly from firstsource.com... still too much though... PF790 monitor was $380 no tax no shipping a few weeks ago... now it's $427+tax+shipping =( oh well... guess the bubble had to burst sometime...

8.6% is nothing compared to our Vehicle Excise Tax that we just got rid of with an initiative. I was paying $200/yr. for a 1992 Corolla. It was supposed to go down with the car's depreciation, but they never kept their tables up to date.

Anyway, I rarely pay Tax if I can avoid it. I do most of my shopping for taxable items on the 'Net, now.

Despite the WA 8.6% tax, we also have NO INCOME TAX. That in itself, should make up for quite a bit. All in all, Washington State is pretty damn good, it's just too bad that Onvia and Amazon and Mercata are all located here (not that Onvia or Mercata will be worth much in a few months).
