OT: Warning about chephostonline.com (Edit: chance to get $35 back from them)

I think many of you may be remember with the hot deal last year at cheaphostonline.com that offer $35 domain + hosting life-time. The only catch is you have to receive a junk email from them a day. I go sign up in November last year. Everything seems to be excellent. But last february my host got down more than 50% of the time. So, I email them and they replied me that they are migrating to their own host (the existing one is on another location, not theirs). I gave them some information to transfer to their own, new server. It's working fine (more than 99% uptime). Until last week, I got this email

Subject: FREEHOSTSPACE.COM SERVICE RESPONCE LETTER

Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 20:22:27 -0600

Reply-to: "FHS Member Services" <memberletter@freehostspace.com>

To all former FreeHostSpace.com customers. We want to set the record
strait about why we are no longer in business. We are no longer in
business because of CheapHostOnline.com's malicious and underhanded
efforts that finally forced us out of business. CHOL effectively
planned
and executed a hostile take over of the FreeHostSpace.com domain name
and
web site. CHOL not only shut the web site down but also against our
wishes
redirected thousands of accounts to CHOL's forced sign up page over the
Easter weekend. FHS has worked for months to migrate accounts from
CHOL's
servers, which are the exact same servers that many of you are having
problems with your site going up and down constantly. These are also
the
servers that CHOL now wants you to pay to stay on.

We had agreements in place with CHOL that if they had chosen to honor
would have prevented all of this from happening. All of the network and
technical support problems that many of you experienced over the last
several months were due to CHOL's less than professional support to us
as
their reseller. Furthermore it is outrageous that CHOL is requiring you
to
sign up through them or risk losing your domain name if you registered
through FreeHostSpace.com. You own this domain name and you should have
the right to host it with whom ever you like. We suggest that you
contact
enom.com either by phone or email and let them know what their reseller
DH
Enterprises is trying to do with your domain name. Enom can and should
over ride this and provide your domain management account information
to
manage your domain name. DH Enterprises is in affect holding your
domain
name hostage unless you host with them. This is unethical and illegal.

We are very sorry that this has happened and did everything in our
power
to prevent it. We trusted CHOL to do the right thing in this situation
so
that our customers would not suffer. Unfortunately CHOL chose to take
the
"pirate" approach and effectively voided an agreement to continue
paying
them while we migrated our accounts from their servers so everyone
could
continue to have a free account. If you do business with
CheapHostOnline.com you are effectively doing business with the very
company that caused all of this to happen to begin with. You will
continue
to have the same poor server up time and customer service that we had
which in affect made us look bad as the company providing you with your
service. This was the very reason we had made the decision to migrate
back
in January to our own data center. Unfortunately we made some business
decisions with CHOL that consequently allowed them to do what they have
done now. However, what they have done was not what was agreed and as
stated earlier was a hostile shut down and take over of
FreeHostSpace.com.
We at FHS thought it better to at least contact our former customers
one
last time and give our side of the story rather than have you only get
CHOL's side, which frankly is a complete and utter disregard for the
truth. We know this does not help alleviate the inconvenience this has
caused you and we tremendously regret once again that this has
happened.

Sincerely,

FreeHostSpace.com

I don't know what is the real story, but just wanna let you guys to be carful for doing business with cheaphostonline.com
Sorry if this is off topic, but I just wanna alert all of you about this.

I got caught in this mess to. Unfortunately when i choose to not continue hosting with them and retrieve my domain name DH was kind enough to charge me $1 even though it was supposed to be free. While I'm not so cheap that a dollar matters it's the fact that after losing my hosting they want to charge me anything that just adds insult to injury.

man, all I can say is I feel sorry for U guys! These letters both sound sooooooooooo childish and unbusinesslike! I would be weary of allowing EITHER one to host ANYTHING of mine for ANY amount of $$! WHAT A RIP! I'm sure that this is what Uall are screaming...just wanted to say "I feel your pain!" and hope that U guys get outta this w/ your stuff! (I hope it doesn't get locked either) 😉

God Bless

Tanner

Just got a latest fight-back message from cheap hostonline.com about this. Hopefully we have a chance to get $35 back as their suggest.

Subject: IMPORTANT: Regarding Cheaphostonline and Freehostspace

Dear FreeHostSpace customers,

This is our final letter that we are sending out to all of
FreeHostSpace (FHS) Customers. This is a MUST READ. PLEASE DON'T RESPOND HERE.
To view updates please go to
http://www.cheaphostonline.net/freehostspace

We at CheapHostOnline (CHOL) never did a hostile take over of FHS
accounts. FreeHostSpace owes us a lot of money which in the message the
sent out to all their free customers they didn't not mention. We came up
with an agreement with FHS that if they didn't pay their weekly agreed
amount that we would be forced to take over the customer account and
take all equipment as well as domain name as well as everything that
belongs to or is owned by FHS. The week of March 24th FreeHostSpace
notified us that they were having problems with their site from the looks of
it was DOS attacks and we could not do anything about it unless FHS
wanted to invest in to getting a firewall which they had opted not to get.
Thursday March 28th we were told by the CEO of FHS Sean Shehan to go
ahead an close down the site and his account because he would not be able
to pay the upcoming bill. We asked several times before we got off the
phone are you sure. Later that night they call back and requ!
ested
to cancel the request but I told them it was too late the process of
email customer had started and the redirection process was in place.

As for the server problems they stated some of the problems are out of
our hands because some of the customers that we have spoken to are on
the new FHS network and not ours. As for server problems from year to
date we have only had one major server problem which all customer
related to that server has been contacted in this case the contact would have
been FHS them selves.

We are not holding any of your website hostage if you so choose to you
can choose to go to another hosting provider all together that is you
choice you just have to choose option two at the website link below.
The reason why it ask for a credit card number is so that we will have
billing information when its time for you domain to be renewed the credit
card will only have a $1 authorization to make sure it valid but that
will go away after a week or so. Those who choose to continue hosting
then you can option one but that is totally up to you. If you
registered the domain with another company and don't choose to keep us as your
host then the option 3 would be to cancel all together which would need
no further contact from you to us.

Just so every customer knows FHS is not complying with our agreement
and so if you have signup with FHS after February 1st or have migrated
to their network since then you may want to consider contacting our
support or sales department so that we can setup you an account on our
network otherwise there is no guarantee on when things might become
resolved.

Lastly, if you signup within the last 6 months you can contact your
bank and request your money to be refunded to you due to "Service Not
Render" from FHS. This only will work if you are on their free account;
this is called a Charge Back. I contacted my bank and they stated that
I can charge back up to 1 year ago if it was a subscription or
something that I didn't get so everyone may be able to get their money back
since FHS has not been in business for more then a year now, its all up to
your bank.

The offer that we have $2.99 for their free account will only be valid
until Friday April 5, 2002 until 5PM PST. After that if you would like
to continue services you will have to signup as a regular customer. We
will still continue to verify all customers accounts after that and
allow you to get control of your domain by selecting the transfer option
to another host.

If you would like to contact the writer of this message you may be
able to do so this weekend Friday 6PM - 10PM, Saturday 9AM - 9PM , and
Sunday 2PM - 7PM PST other then that we have disable our phone support
temporarily until we get a hold of this.

We apologize for in incognizance that all of this may have caused.

To view update and selection the option that you plan on taking please

Just as ruined mentioned, same thing with me. I'm not cheap either, but it does add salt into the wound. So much for "free".
