TOOCOOL...

There could be a misconfiguration in your unrealtournament.ini. Also check to make sure that your (I'm assuming windoze?) resolution is set the same as the game's resolution...

Lockups at startup could be anything... 🙁

[EDIT - can you run it locally? Also, I'm assuming that mplayer is just running standard maps with no extra skins and mods, but maybe they are???? If there's weird mods, that could cause a lockup too]

There's some issues with some video cards and drivers too.

Never mind... I can see your sig - (what your system specs are)

The only problem i can see is that your system doesn't have enough oomph...

i don't know how to say it more delicatly...I'm not trying to put your system down....but i don't think it has enough power to play the game, let alone playing it online...I assume with that video card you are running in software mode, and you probably have some kind of winmodem in your system....you are pushing that K6-2 to it's limit....

🙂

SpaceWalker!!!!

I run a dedicated UT server on a K6-2/500 and played on my dual Xeon II 400 just fine until I finally decided to use my newly OC'd (at that time) P3 600@800 as my game box... The K6-2 is still a game server though (also running folding and RC5 at the same time... 😉)

Most people I know playing UT either play with a geforce card or like me, some Voodoo card running GLIDE. If anything, the vid card would be the bottleneck. But again, it could be other things... for instance, the version...

Need some more info to be able to troubleshoot...

If you haven't been here in a while, you may want to take a look.

<< "The game crashes in Direct3D mode either during launch or when switching resolutions in the video preferences menu."
First install DirectX 7 from your game CD, or the latest version available from Microsoft. DirectX is required for Direct3D mode to work. Then, update your video card drivers to the latest versions available from the manufacturer, or the latest reference drivers available from the card's chip manufacturer. Reference drivers tend to work best on 3dfx and Riva TNT/TNT2 cards as the manufacturer's versions don't always comply fully with Direct3D standards.

If this doesn't help, read on:
"During launch the game simply crashes back to the Windows desktop with no error message."
If you are using an AMD K6 processor and have modified it to run at a bus speed higher than 66 MHz, then you must reset your processor to run at a bus speed of 66 MHz. AMD states that 66 MHz is the only safe bus speed supported by the K6. Once you have done this, the game should stop crashing.

If you aren't using an AMD K6, read on:
"After the game launches it locks up on a black screen."
Try starting the game in Unreal Tournament in Unreal Tournament Safe Mode from the Windows 95 Start menu. This mode is similar to Windows 95's Safe Mode, meaning it runs Unreal Tournament with unnecessary options disabled. If the game runs in safe mode, you can then modify the options in the Advanced Options menu to turn off any options that may be causing problems, then run Unreal Tournament again. (To access the Advanced Options, hit the ~ (tilde) key to bring down the console, and type "preferences".)

If you've already tried this and the problem still occurs, please refer to our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ for additional suggestions.

Here's my long shot. Look for this line in your UnrealTournament.ini file: [Engine.GameEngine]
CacheSizeMegs=4 <- Default

Change the CacheSizeMegs to at least 64 if not 80. That way you won't have to cache so much information back to your hard drive when starting or changing levels. You may also want to set up a custom sized swap file on your hard drive. To do that, hold down the Windows key and hit Break. Click on the Performance tab, then click the Virtual Memory button in the lower right corner. Click the radio button for: Let me specify my own virtual memory settings. You should set it to 1.5 - 2 times the amount of RAM you have in your system. Make absolutily sure the Minimum and Maximum are set to the same value! Reboot your computer and defrag the hard drive for best performance.

If all of the above fails, then the UT Gods have not been smiling on you. Go to Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs and get rid of Mplayer. It's the biggest POS on the face of the planet, next to AOHell of course.

thanks for the quick replies

i have directx 8 installed
virtual memory has its own dedicated hard drive and was already
setup like you sugested
i did the ini thing🙂
vid card has the latest driver

Problem not solved yet the game runs fine in 3d as a single player but
will only run in software rendering online very wierd

Guess its time for a new vid card(and a new computer eventually spacewalker😉) what is the better card for this game voodoo or mx

are you using @home? If so that could be the problem playing at mplayer. I can't play there. Asked tech help @mplayer about it and they said that @home blocks their server, but that was when heat.net was up and running, and @home was hosting the site.

Poof...

There's a big difference in performace on a k6-2 between running a dedicated sever and actually playing the game online on that computer...I can set up a dedicated server on a P200mmx but that doesn't mean i can play the game on it....

SpaceWalker - I know that!!! 😉

But I did run UT on my Xeon II 400 for a few months (only diff. between that and a PII 400 is the large core-speed cache), and UT ran just fine... And that was using a Voodoo2 1000 PCI card too!! For most games, the bottleneck is the video card. My current gamebox uses a V3 3000 card.

I think other than what Danzigrules mentioned about @home (if that's what is being used to get to mplayer) and the vid card, I think the problem may be with DirectX8.

I have read so many posts on planetunreal.com's forums about DirectX8 problems that it has had my head spinning. A bunch of people deinstalled it and moved back to DirectX7 (despite the probs with that).

Also - remmber everyone that 3DFx was absorbed by Nvidia, so even though UT was made and optimized for the Voodoo cards (which I use for UT), eventually that chipset and support for it by Epic/Loki, is probably gonna change.... 🙁

How do you uninstall DirectX 8? I'd like to go back to 7.0a but a FAQ on microsoft's directx site it says "DirectX 8.0 is a system component and cannot be uninstalled". How would you go about manually doing it?

Nohr... I know... It's a mess and that's what the posters on planetunreal.com have noted. That thing leaves traces of itself everywhere supposedly.

I don't remember what others did (aside from reinstalling 7 and then making it worst or reinstalling windoze), but I'm wondering if some 3rd-party utility might be able to do it... :frown:

This is one of the reasons why I run Linux... 😉

(I game with the UT linux version... 😀)

Ah okay, kind of figured it wouldn't be the funnest of things to do. Guess I will just leave it be until I decide to get my Tbird and I'll reinstall Windows then. I've considered trying out Linux, but not on my main machine.

Thanks anyhow. 🙂

Ahh.... Hellburner to the rescue! 🙂

And Nohr - do put linux on your main system! If you have a decent-sized hard drive, you can make it dual boot. In fact, if you're going to reinstall windoze, you could create 2 partitions on your hard drive, install windoze in the first one, and leave the 2nd for linux later when you're ready... That way you won't have to redo stuff... You'd just boot to a linux install disk and have it install to that 2nd partition. And during the install, you'll usually get an option to install some sort of boot manager to let you go to either...

🙂

Thanks for the link Hellburner. I'll give it a shot later tonight. 🙂

Poofs, I have a 20GB hard drive and I might consider making a few gigabyte partition to play with Linux on when I reinstall. I initially wasn't planning on formatting the drive since I've got 2.5GB worth of mp3's on it. Maybe I can figure out some way to get the one's I want to fit on my wife's 1GB drive and a couple zip disks. Anyway, thanks for the idea. I've always wanted to try out Linux. 🙂
