OT: USS Ronald Reagan Commissioning

As Many of you know I am an enlisted man in the US Navy. Today my ship USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) will be commissioned. For those of you who are interested in these kind of things, there a few links below including a live webcast of the whole ceremony. The ship's sponsor id Nancy Reagan and the Key Note speaker is Vice President Cheney. The Ceremony is supposed to start at approximately 11 am EST. If you watch it, I will be roughly the fourth person to run onboard the ship infront of Nancy Reagan when we Bring the Ship to Life. This ceremony is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of the Sailors onboard and is full of tradtion. No matter what your nationality is, I hope if you watch you enjoy it and think of those who have safrificed to make it possible for us to have the freedoms we do. Remember the History of this Ceremony dates back way farther than the U.S. and many of the traditions are worldwide military traditions. I am not asking you to support the U.S. I am asking you to support the Armed Forces of YOUR Country. They all deserve more than they get!!

Man, truely sorry ReaganCRW! I saw an empty thread and couldn't help myself. Congrats on the Commission. I hope you know that I would never NEF a thread about anything even remotely related to ANY of our Servicemen or Servicewomen. I, for one, truely appreciate ALL you do to protect our Freedom. Waaay too many people take for granted that we can drive our own cars, play with computers, and have 3 square meals a day. We don't have to worry about RPG's, tanks, or helicopters invading our privacy as many in other countries do! Sorry it took me so long to fix this, hard to type through the tears......I get emotional about my country.

No pun intended, I'm sure. Did anyone see that interview of Nancy Reagan lately? Forgot what show it was on. What a wonderful person.

And hope things go smoothly for ya today! Won't be able to watch (today's my oldest's Sweet Sixteen b-day and we'll be heading out soon for various things).


But...AT could get its *own* carrier?

4.5 million isnt bad. GA (general avation..cessna, piper ect) planes could probably take off/land on that deck with the boat moving into the wind. I can see a bunch of millionares going together and buying this, going out to sea for a week or so and flying their Bonanzas around in the middle of the pacific. You can store the planes under deck and have plenty of room to sleep. Sounds fun if you ask me.

4.5 million I believe is incorrect. More like 4.5 Trillion. I don't know why the webcast said that, but if it was that cheap, many more people (Governments) would have them. Seven years to build with a government contract? I've been in the military a long time and I know a million dollars is chump change when it comes to spending. It's actually easier to get approval for a million dollars to upgrade a base LAN then it is to get a $30,000 server.

I'd suggest watching the whole ceremony. I had tears in my eyes at some of the comments concerning our president RR. 🙁

You can see our ReaganCRW during the "Man the ship and bring her alive!" order issued by Nancy Reagan which begins at 1:02 of the broadcast. 🙂

that boat will take on more than just cesna's....harriers and choppers would work well. could probably run f15 hornets off of it too considering the short take off and landing of the f15. the israli army could probably use this antiquated piece of equipment.
 
F-15s could never land or be launched off of a CVN. The landing gear aren't strong enough to take the stresses involved. F-14s, EA-6Bs, F/A-18s, E-2Cs, and C-1s all can but the Eagle is only capable of landing on a 12,000 ft runway.

I lived not far from where the Nimitz class carriers are built. They are a sight to see even 10 miles off shore. You get a real grasp of their size from that far out.
