I'm building a pc for the 1st time and am having a problem with my motherboard posting. The power goes on and then thats it. It just runs without a beep or anything flashing on my monitor. Its an asus p4s333. I plugged in the power led, speaker connector, reset sw, power switch, message led. Am I supposed to plug anything else in. I'm totally clueless :(

You sure you got those leads plugged in the proper way?

Might check at amdmb.com, too.

Thoughts on building a PC for the first time..

Build it outside of the case on a plastic crate or something - that way you can be sure the board isn't shorting against the metal case or standoffs; additionally, doing it this way will allow you to test components before going thru the trouble of mounting them in the case.

Additionally, boot the machine up initially with just the ram and cpu and video card in the board - if you're not getting a good POST at that point there isn't any point in hooking up the floppy/hd/cd/sound/nic etc. ;)

What NWM said. I use an anti-static bag on the workbench.
When you say on, does the fan on the CPU come on and stay on?

1. Double check all jumper settings
2. Double check all switch/led connections. Make sure the On switch is connected to the correct leads. On some MBs, it is a separate set of leads than the other connectors. In fact, at first, just start with the ON switch, leave the rest unconnected.
3. Double check that the CPU, RAM, and video card are seated properly.
4. Unplug HD/Floppy cables, take out all cards except the video card.
5. Clear the CMOS.

Boot up the PC with just the CPU, RAM, and Video card, keyboard, and mouse. What happens?

If it still doesn't boot up, try the RAM in a different slot, and try a different stick of RAM if possible.

Try a different video card.

Then try a different CPU.

If you have another PC that the parts would work in, try them in it.

It's mainly a methodical process of elimination.

Good luck with it.

If all the fans turn on, but no beeps are issued, it is either the CPU or Memory.

Thanks for trying to help me but its still a no go. The fans turn on and even the video card fan turns on. Unfortunately I don't have any extra memory or cpus to test because my current computer is an athlon with pc 100 ram. I guess I have to take it into a computer shop and have them take a look at it.

Have you tried re-seating the CPU? That has sometimes done the trick for me in the past.

It could also be the motherboard. :(

What you describe is what I've experienced twice in the last couple of months. All devices, cards, cpus, Power Supplies, etc. checked out on identical or near identical motherboards ... only thing left was the motherboard. :(

Now this was on systems that had been working. Since this the first time you have tried to put this rig together, something not connected correctly is still a strong possibility. Sometimes the connections to J2 and J3 need to be reversed (label facing front or back of case). Give that a try if you are sure you have all the pins properly connected.

Now I'm no expert, ha, that is for sure but just wanted to pass on another relative newbies experiences. ;)

I'm pretty sure its the motherboard. I did install one motherboard about 3 years ago that actually worked! I double and triple checked every connection. Going to send it back to newegg. Team seti is going to have to wait for my 1.6 @ 2.1 cruncher another week unfortunately :(

Just one thought, are you using a Norwood CPU? If so, your motherboard BIOS might not recognize it.
