OT: Trials and Tribulations - A Novel by Teriba

So I got a Sony 16x DVD for Christmas from my parents. I fly out here to Victoria and bring all of my DVD movies with me. Actually it is a sad collection consisting of a ski movie, two biking movies, the Smashing Pumpkins DVD and the Godfather Trilogy.
I install the DVD player and it plays a movie fine. I say yes and stick another movie in. It can't find the disc. I put the original movie back in and it can't find it either. I reboot and try again.

I install ATI DVD 5.0 (I was using PowerDVD 3.0 before) and try to load the movie. No go. I try a data CD and it doesn't find it. I try a music CD, same story.

I change the cables and jumpers around in case it might like it better as master. I reboot and try again.

The computer stays up for about 5 minutes and then shuts down. This time it doesn't boot. I turn it off for awhile and then turn it back on. Again it stays up for about 5 minutes and then shuts down. I turn it off and leave it until I clear my head and don't throw it out the window.

I try it once more and it does the same thing, boots, loads windows and then shuts down. I open her up and look around. My hand brushes the heatsink and it is damn hot. F*ck I say and turn it on again to see if it works. Nope. Check the cable, unplugged. Plug it back in and the computer stays on now.

I still have the problem with the DVD player though, it will only recognize a CD/DVD if I first go into Device Manager, view the dvd's properties and then close the window. Weird. I try it as Master again. It finally works properly.

To top it off I still don't know if I have gotten into UVic, though classes have started this morning. They say they will get back to me when they review my transcripts. Life is beautiful, not.
