OT - Sharing Outlook .pst file

Has anyone been able to do this? I have 2 computers that are both running Outlook 2k3 (both run seti....) I would like to share the .pst file but when I try to bring one up, it tells me that it is being used by another program, which it is. Is there anyway to accomplish this with both systems up and running and Outlook open?

The short answer to this is no.

This is due to the very nature of how Outlook and PST files work. When one instance of Outlook is running and has a PST file open, there is no way to access that PST file from another machine without closing Outlook on the other machine.

Here is a link that has some information on how to share Outlook data. The easiest solution to these problems is to implement Exchange server but not everyone has the $$$ necessary to implement Exchange.

Couldnt you copy the pst to both computers to say my documents, import the file to each Outlook program one at a time with the other machine offline? Once imported would it make any diff where the Outlook PST resides?

I think what he is trying to accomplish is to share a single PST file among two computers.

You can store a PST file anywhere. The physical location is irrelevant. The problem is that only one Outlook session (one machine) can have the PST file open at any given time.

Correct. The reason is this. I use Outlook on my main machine but I am starting to do some more sork on my server in my workshop. So I would like to be able to track my e-mail in their without closing all the time on my main. My wife uses the caqlendar a lot on that one as well. Plus I have an account that I get weekly lineup e-mail's for a fantasy football leage that I run. I then have a rule that moves that e-mail to a sub-folder and also saves that e-mail as a text file on my network. I keep them all in a folder so if there are any lineup issues I can find them easily. What I would really like to do though is have the server handle ONLY the football account and my main system handle all the others, but still go to the same .pst file. I have a beta version on exchange 2k3 that I can try out. But then I really do not want to spend the extra money. I do have a box that has Server 2000 sitting in it, can I use that server to do this or does it have to be exchange?

Go get a copy of lansuite, up to 5 users is free to use as your mail server. Set outlook to keep e-mail on you server or run in mapi mode.

I just use a web browser to check my mail now.
