OT: Removing a HS/F from CL TNT2 Ultra

I had to pull this card out of one of my boxs and have a BLUE ORB to replace the HS/F on it. I cant quite figure out how best to get the dern thing off so I can put the ORB on. Any suggestions?

Yeah, use this simple method.

You'll need a flat head screwdriver (smaller ones are better for this) and some sort of plastic card - preferably not your credit card (something a little less valuable).

Place the credit card between the HSF and the surface it is attached to. Place the flat head driver between the card and the HSF. Twist the screwdriver. The HSF should come off. Due to using the card, you will spread the force over a large surface area of the card - preventing any scratches or damage.

Migroo is right. Just twist a flathead between the heatsink and the card to pop it out. However, there's really no need for a blueorb for a TNT2U IMHO.

Yeah, that's the method, but I'm with serialb. Why are you doing this? Has the fan gone bad? Is the card locking up under stress? Weird graphical glitches? I can't imagine wanting to overclock a TNT2. Maybe 2 years ago......
 
The GF2U I can understand. I guess there's a lot of folks out there clinging to that old technology with a kung-fu grip! 😱

Yup, unless I have forced an AGP card into my PCI-only motherboard and got it working!! 🙂

Maggotry - Nah, just pointless spending money on upgrading a video card in a machine I dont often use for gaming - were talking about my 'server' here - it just shares my connection, burns CDRs etc.

I just twist it Off! 😀

Only turn it one way though, if you twist it c/wise and cc/wise you might break the tabs from the gpu! 😱
 
I have a TNT2 Ultra in my server too. It's the last remnants of a 2.5 year old "top of the line" screamer (500MHz PIII Slot, 256 PC100)! :Q
I don't overclock it because I don't play games on it. Besides, how many extra frames do you think you would get in something like RTCW, Unreal II, etc?
 
If I recall correctly, the best way to do it is to stick it in a freezer for a few hours, take it out and pop it off. I have not tried this, so no promises!!!

Youre probably right, but I like tweaking things 🙂

I dont OC past the point where it affects stability though. Uptime - about 30 days since last reboot at the moment. 🙂

Tried it on a tnt2 and snapped the core in 1/2. That was good. 🙂 Now when I have to remove one, I use the credit card trick. Read post above 😀
 
Argh Evadman - that made me cringe!!

It is a good point though that putting it in the freezer is supposed to help it, although it sounds like Evadman's card got too cold... 🙁

Believe it or not...all 4 machines I have at home are not overclocked.

Dual 533 - It's at the top of it's family of processors and won't o/c for isht. Best I could get it up to was somewhere in the 560 neighborhood. Figured the occasional reboot/bluescreen this might cause would negate a roughly 5% performance gain.

Celeron 400 - The mobo is a POS that I got for free. Can't adjust FSB.

P2/350 - This is my DC/File Server/DNS/SetiQ/FTP/ect....used to have it o/c'ed to 392 but dropped it back down for stability. The fact that it's been running SETI more or less 24/7 for 2.5 years w only a heat sink and no fan is amazing in it's own.

Dual 1600 - Ok, here I have to claim laziness. 🙂 Will get to it after the 20 other enhancements I have on my plate.
