Quick question...haven't been paying attention to the pc hardware scene in a while (long while) so pls excuse my ignorance...

I have a Tyan Tiger 2460 (see autosig) that I melted a processor on and want to get back in the mix.

#1 - Can you run dual XP's? I vaguely recall that at one point AMD made changes so that it wouldn't work any more. Specifically what I'm thinking about doing is getting two new XP 2000+'s. I would greatly prefer having it work OOTB and not having to deal w modifying the processor, closing circuits, drawing lines, etc.

#2 - Assuming 1==true, what's the fastest I can go? Anything w a 266FSB?

I have two duallies Tyan 2466 and Asus . The motherboard you have experiences problems with higher watt CPU`s . Please check out 2cpu.com for more info. I think the power connector is the problem. Xp`s still work (even Bartons) with a mod. If you check out Ebay for AMD MP CPU you will find someone selling modded Tbreds and Bartons at a good price. I have not dealt with this person, but the price and products are very tempting. He does the mod and tests in dual mode. I think older Palimino core CPU work without modification. If the last L5 bridge is uncut it should work. You should search 2cpu.com forums for anything you would like to know about duallies, there is a wealth of information there specific to multiple processing. I seem to remember that your board is a little weak in the power regulation department.

Running a 2460 here. From what I've read, it can't take higher than XP1900+ or heat will become a severe issue and damage the motherboard (the ATX connector from the power supply gets fried or even catches fire).

I have XP1800+ chips (not MPs) and it runs fine.

I will say, though, that running registered RAM is highly recommended. I couldn't get SETI going on normal RAM (even Crucial and Kingston RAM). Switched to a gig of registered and it's been a champ since.

Turns out bridging the L5 is even easier than I thought. Had to bridge (I believe) the L1 for my parents machine a while back to get around a voltage problem and that was a PITA dealing w the epoxy and everything. This looks like more of a fire and forget operation. There's a guy on ebay selling a standard mp1600, if that doesn't fall through I think I'll pick up two 1900's from newegg and bridge the L5.

Now to turn my dead 1600 into a keychain....

I had one of the original batch of the Tiger MP. I upgraded the cpu from dual Thunderbird 1400 to dual XP1900+. It worked great for 2 weeks then one day it just won't boot. If you have the early version of the board, I suggest to limit your cpu to 1800+. You'll know you have the very old version of the motherboard if you see a capacitor jumped between an IC & a surfaced mount capacitor near the PFAN connector. I have two other early version of the board and did not have problem when I upgraded the cpu to Thoroughbred 1800+.

Goodluck.

You CAN mod the motherboard with additional power support... you find details doing a search on 2cpu.com forums. It does require soldering skills and a nominal parts cost.

You don't even have to go over 1900. :(

I had 1800s in mine. It was on, then it just died.

The highest I took my own dualie(s) was XP1600s, and that was with the very first ones that became available, before AMD starting making them with the bridges set so they wouldn't work in an SMP config by default.

Edit: Oh yeah, this was with the Tyan S2460 board(s).
