OT: *POLL* Should members asking for programming help be "required" to declare whether it is for homework or not?

Much in the same way "YACT" and "YAGT" are "required" in OT.

My view: these damn kids should put a little more effort into their work rather than copy/pasting the problem here. Questions regarding school work should be very detailed and specific, otherwise I want a portion of their degree when they graduate.

No. What does it matter?

EDIT: If it is homework, they're only hurting themselves if they post it for someone else to do. When they're tested on it (at a job, class, whatever), they're not going to know what they should... 😉

If it is homework and they declare it, then some explanations can be provided to the lowest common denominator

No.. asking for help for homeworks is perfectly valid, unless it's like "OMGWTFBBQ my homework is due tmr and Im hafto create an array of an array of bananas plz do it fo me lol plz plz plz" then feel free to turn on the AT flamethrower..

Not true. Many CS classes are graded on a curve. Any undeserved "points" can lower someone else's grade. So I voted "yes".

well if you don't wanna help don't help it shouldn't really matter if it's for homework or not. if you're that concerned, give a link to info instead of the code.

sometimes I ask for help but usually it's for something not directly related to my homework assignment. like the SIC question I asked before. I got the logic of the assembler down pretty good, I just needed to kinow how to convert a string to its ascii hex. nobody gave me code, they just pointed me in the right direction.

I agree, whether or not you require a declaration, it's always obvious why they're asking. I think there's enough natural resistance towards doing someone's homework for them that those who ask too much already get the flames they have coming. I don't see a need to change the way it works.

They're not gonna know very much on exams if they have copied it from someone else... that hurts their grade. If they come here for every single homework and post a thread about it, people will stop helping.

It's easier to spot a homework question than a non-homework one. If you think it's homework, don't reply.

Ditto. Also, how do you enforce it? Seems like more of a bother than it's worth.

(not that I don't agree with the sentiment behind the idea)

There should be a way to make it mandatory that people posting homework questions have at least read the lesson and actually attempted to write the solution before posting.

Exactly, I think people were misjudging my OP. I have absolutely no problem helping people on homework, but they should be forthcoming about it and demonstrate they have a grasp on the basics first, or at least attempt to do something.

Finally! A chance to utilize my banana array...
