OT: Patch your Windows boxes!

Gah, I made my windows partition too small. I need some partition magic before I can patch. Anyone know any good deals? I'll suffer through rebates if I have too.

This bites... I was in the middle of downloading a large file, and now I have to log out so Windows can apply the patches (I have it set to download and prompt me, but not install them automatically). Oh well, at least it's worthwhile. 🙂

I thought I was keeping up with things! I had 15 patches!

What I did notice of concern is that the update site will soon only support Win XP with SP1. So, when I have to rebuild a cruncher I may be in trouble.

8 high priority and a malicious software removal tool, I guess this is MS's first step to integrate antivirus functionality into XP...

Microsoft has plans to update Windows Update to only work with validated OS licenses.

From the Feb. 5, 2005 Technet newsletter:
As was widely reported last week, Microsoft's Windows Client team says that by mid-2005 it plans to start requiring Windows users to "authenticate" that their copy of Windows is genuine before the Windows update feature will allow them to download security updates.

However, there's quite a bit of misinformation surrounding this program. With the caveat that future plans are subject to change, here is my take on what's actually been said, and what it means:

1) The Windows Genuine Advantage program isn't as new as some "news" sites would have you believe. In fact, this opt-in pilot has been in place for several months -- an infrastructure pilot of the program launched back on September 16 targeted roughly five percent of the content available for download from the Download Center. An expanded pilot was launched in October in five languages.

2) There are no current plans to require users running automatic updates to provide proof that their copies of Windows are genuine. During the opt-in period, until required validation is in place, all users (genuine or not) will have access to all security updates and fixes via the Microsoft Download Center, Windows Updates and Automatic Updates.

3) Users of browsers other than Internet Explorer are not locked out of the update-checking mechanism.

Conspiracy theorists may think otherwise, but I believe the program will reduce the number of potential zombie-bots out there, and for IT pros everywhere, that's a good thing. Frequently asked questions about the program can be found here:

I slipstreamed SP2 onto my original XP w/no SP CD. Even doing it the "hard way" is very easy (I don't trust third-party auto-patching tools). When I did it, I found this guide useful. 🙂

thanks for the heads up. damn windows! there is no point to developing a server operating system if i have to take it down every single month for updates! we have 15 servers at my job and rebooting all of them has to be done late at night or early in the AM. sucks to be the IT bitch around here 🙁

Thanks for the Link and the heads up Guys

I have auto updates enabled, and still had 10 to manually select. So much for auto update...... What's the point? It doesn't seem to be autoupdating quicker than I can do it manually.

Thanks! Looks like a good option and a great site!
