OT: out of curiosity...

Someone's opinion about Distributed Computing (i.e. "This project looks cool") might affect which project(s) I run, but wouldn't let people I know well and in person offend me with their opinions regardless of how hostile and/or idiotic they may be and I certainly wouldn't let people I barely know (or don't know at all) affect me that way.

Everyone is different, but that's my opinion and I hope it doesn't upset you! 😉

Depends on who it is. There are lots of people I associate with in the DC community that I consider as real as any other encounter. Their opinion matters to me.

There are also people that hide behind their screens and act in ways that demonstrate they have no caring because they won't ever be face to face. Their opinion doesn't matter to me at all.

What did you do now Fullmetal Chocobo???

I'm sure i've made people mad once or twice by forgetting to post stats. Withdrawal ain't a pretty thing. As a matter of fact, i can feel the collective shakes coming on... oh wait, i forgot the washers on spin cycle.

I didn't do anything. Nor did I do anything previously! Oh, that reminds me. I need to do the laundry.

LoL. I just did the laundry..

Back On Topic:

Some TeAm- mates' opinions matter more than others: those I know well - and those know who they are - matter a lot, because they are - here in cyberspace - trusted friends. Cyberspace is real: the people are real, their opinions are real, their strengths and weaknesses are real and therefore they matter.

In cyberspace the opinion of someone may differ from the opinion of the same person in RL because the inputs, the surroundings, the influence of cyberspace are different from the influence in RL.

In RL different people have different influence on me. Some more, others less. That is exactly the same as in cyberspace.

The risk to be disappointed in cyberspace is as large as in real life - OTOH we expect to be less disappointed by people in RL because we meet them, see them (can read them better) and because we believe that it is harder to deceive in RL than in cyberspace. That may or may not be true - in cyberspace we can decide if and how to react much more freely than in RL, because the distance in space, time (-zones) and anonymity is larger. In RL we often think we have to react because it is expected or because the need to react seems so immediate.

I think I could go on more ...but why?

Would you be genuinely upset if the DC folks were mad or upset at you? Would it affect you in real life?

Wait .... <GLeeM looks both ways> .... this isn't real life?

I find the question very insightful.....................and thought provoking, so:

It has affected me in the past and will in the future I'm sure.

It is not hard to like DC folks because they have an altruistic streak, even when they are being competitive. So if one got mad or upset at me it would be notable because it would be out of character and I would be totally chagrined if I caused it.

This reaction would not necessarily hold true on other forums.

So REALLY Fullmetal Chocobo exactly what DID you do??

I like everyone in the DC forum and value the opinions of, and appreciate the camaraderie here. Also the twisted sense of humor. I don't spend much time here, but the time that I do, feels like time well spent to me. Even if it is just ignoring a thread now and then...

Whenever one of my jokes doesn't get at least 2 LOL's, I get discouraged and crawl under the bed with my dancing dust bunnies. It affects them too, because my sobbing makes them damp and they stop dancing!

Hmmm ... did you say something to Liz that you shouldn't have and try to get out of it by saying it was your online personna and not really you? 😀

I don't know, if I can't figure it out maybe I will just have to start ignoring this thread! Maybe I did just figure it out.

maybe I will just have to start ignoring this thread!

I'm with you GLeeM.......... it's time to start ignoring this thread, before one of my dogs............ sees the cat.

All these animals ... aren't we getting off topic? 😉
I can't ignore that!

We were talking about the influence of TeAm mates from cyberworld on us in real life 😱
