So I'm just curious since you've done it twice so far, are you going to hop into this forum every time someone's looking for a new modem and recommend that one, like you've done in the Pacbell forum, the Earthlink forum, the Qwest forum, among others? Let me guess...can that modem be bought at the URL in your sig?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So apparently Dave has been hawking his DSL modems all over the place and quite frequently, too. Busy beaver, eh?

See that thread here.

Look at the rest of each of the threads where they talk about other Modems like Speedstreams and Westells that the people can't do things that they would like to do. It's simple pointing out there is a choice. I started with the word OR doesn't that mean a Choice? Isn't that what you do in Forums OR is it an exclusive Private club for the Phone Companies only? Better stop talking about all of the other hardware in Networking or CPU etc etc, you can't talk about the differences or choice about an AMD or Intel. Better erase all the gazillion of threads that had these discussions. Better shut down the Forums themselves.

These people had the Modems they are trying to work with rammed down their throats by their ISP with NO CHOICE. There's your whole story.

C'DaleRider RaySun2be quoted that thread up in the early going of this thread. It was one of the ones I was refering to when I commented some of his posts were a bit too comercial. It's not exactly new evidence....

I guess I can see why the mods removed his sig line. I also think better communication would serve both sides. There seems to be confusion as to why some users can post links for their companies/workplaces and not others? Regardless I think we are just rehasing old ground, so I'll let this thread die. Unless Dave gets some response from the mods there is not much more to discuss...

The fact that you come in and recommend hardware that can conveniently be bought from you... that is flat out advertising. You didn't pay, they can do what they want. The phone companies most likely contribute funds to BBR, so they are given priveledges that you aren't afforded. You're just losing more and more respect with every post you make.

And before you say it, yes, I know I have a link in my sig. Do I go into every post and 'recommend' my products? No. Have I maybe made some posts that could be considered advertising before? Probably. Do the mods have the right to delete my sig? Absolutely.

maybe you should read this

Q: You can't tell me what I can or can't say! (#4720)
A: Well, if you've already seen the item above this one, (What are the rules on posting?), then you have your answer. But if you didn't, here's an outstanding and informative response by 2kmaro to an anonymous user, who said,
"I'll post whatever I want. This is a public website with public forums. These arbitrary rules are bullshit that some dweeb thought up to stroke himself over. Free speech is a right under the Constitution's Bill Of Rights, and any publicly accessible website that hosts forums is just that, public, and subject to all the laws and rights granted to citizens of the United States."
(The post also had some additional ranting and swearing in it.)

Response by 2kmaro:
I'm going to let your post stand - for all of it's obvious bravery.
Now, this is not a PUBLIC website - it is privately owned and operated and just like your own trailer park residence, there are rules established by the owner. Like any website that offers the public the opportunity to post their comments, there are rules. These rules are commonly called Terms of Service. Here at DSLR they are published here:
»/terms.html
They are further defined through several site FAQs:
On 'Censorship'
Rules of Posting

If you read the Terms of Service, you'll note that it states very plainly in words that most literate people can read and understand, that once you post it here it becomes the property of the site and from that point on you have no control over what happens to it: deleted, edited, trashed, praised or whatever. In other words, you just made a donation to DSLR without reservation.

You speak of not having the "nerve" to stand up for what you really believe and what America stands for. Well, I haven't figured out the "what America stands for" part of that, but at least I had the nerve to post under my normal user ID and not come crawling in here anonymously leaving a trail of belly slime as I did so. You obviously have a real problem with the site rules here.

As a moderator I am often called upon to help people solve the problems they bring with them to the DSLR forums. I believe I can help you with yours: take your attitude, shove it where the sun don't shine and toddle off to some other site to spread your pasture droppings.

Since the person starting this thread has some inkling of the concept of respecting the rules of others when visiting in their house, we'll leave the post in view. But locked.

You compain about "saying things that were not said anyway" but even in your new thread title, it's quite a stretch to claim that your ONE hyperlink being labelled spam implies that all hyperlinks are spam.

Besides, spam doesn't strictly refer to unsolicited commercial e-mail. Channel Flooding in IRC is often referred to as spamming. Sending useless IMs are often reffered to as spam. E-mail forwards, even non-commercial ones, are often referred to as spam.

You answered the fact in your own post. I didn't SEND anything. ONE static word is now spam.

so you are arguing semantics over the word spam...
the real issue is you trying to sell your stuff in a way that is not allowed on this site.

quote from their faqs:
" Q: LINKS in posts, sigs etc. (#6498)
A: To bring some uniformity to what we allow and don't allow in the way of promotion and self-promotion, here are guidelines.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posting in the forums encouraging others to join another site is tolerated once, IF the poster is not personally involved with that site.

For example: "Widget.com has a new custom news service, click here".

URLs in sigs: Adding a link such as "my favorite website" to your sig is acceptable, again,

IF the poster is not personally involved with that site (ie, not working for or with them etc.)

and the site is not sleazy, overtly commercial, or in the same line of business as us.

Links to non-profit websites are fine.

Links to helpful sites that are in a business related to DSLR are acceptable above forums, in faqs or in posts as long as the link does not get re-posted or continually mentioned."

seems pretty damn cut and dry to me.

Yeah, except that the SBC DSL Store has been mentioned in at least 38 threads, which is a LOT more than David's postings, also violating the TOS. I'm not going to go in depth as to why I think that is tolerated vs David's, but it probably has to do somewhat with the $50 per signup referral they get from the broadband providers.

But, I agree that it's their site, and they can run it anyway they want, biased or not. Best thing for David to do is remove the referral link to DSLReports from his website, edit his sig to remove any text about his website, and move on.

Heh, you think $$$'s got something to do with it? 😉 Seriously though, it's their site and thus their right. I don't agree with them as far as a link = spamming but if that's the way they see it they can treat it as such. I agree with you 100%. Don't support their site and move on.

Exactly! I'm sure glad I'm not the only one seeing this as a legitimate course of action. 🙂

I'm not sure exactly how this topic got in the DC forum, but since it did I'd like to offer my opinion.

If you don't like the forum, don't use it.

If you want to use it, you have to put up with mods.... just like we do at AT

PS: I don't think a hyperlink is SPAM either

This whole thing is kinda getting out of hand! I agree with a lot of what is said here on both ends. I would like to add this. SPAM is a damn meat loaf thing! Just kidding. To the ones saying that going around hawking your site is wrong, whatever. All day long I see links to this and that online, I see billboards, I see tv commercials, I see reebok shirts, yada yada yada! If you are in a forum and you see a link in a sig and you don't want to go there...DON'T! Don't cry SPAM! Just don't go there and shut up! I am tired of all this spam crybaby BS! If you get an e-mail that you don't want to read, DELETE! Just like I do every day. Set up my filter and what does not get caught, DELETE! I would much rather that, then having to carry a 25lb bag of SPAM snail mail once a week to my local recycler so I can help save a friggin tree! My opinion is that Dave should tell DSLR or BBR or whatever they want to be called to stuff it and not go there anymore. He says he got permission, I believe him. So to the high and mighty who are on some kind of SPAM crusade........whatever!

P.S.
SPAM

SPAM MMMMMM Tasty!
