Eventually this will lead to people not being able to get high speed internet access and basically the end of the internet as we know it.

Not what I said at all, don't know what the heck you are reading.

Thank you all for your interesting remarks albeit heated and unneccessarilly personal as I take the flame suit off and close with no further remarks to this thread. Too much straying around many issues and saying things that were not said anyway.

Have a Good Day :D

With all of the legal issues the EFF is dealing with related to the Internet and the only one people are crying foul over is getting SPAM in their E-mail address box, it's no wonder the Internet will be done and over before it even gets a chance to really get going.

You won't have an Internet (A World online Interactive Newspaper), all you will have is Spam E-mail.

are there any scheduled trips to this little world you live in? I think it would be fun to come to your personal reality and see just how horrible everything is, as everything is against you. get a grip. this is just like the sign at the store. "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" you violated an rule that you agreed to and now they are the bad guys for giving you the boot? quit crying and go home to mommy where it is safe from the real world. although you keep up this persecution thing and pretty soon everyone will be against you...
bottom line is :
if you don't like "their" forum's rule and regulations? don't use them! make your own damn site and be happy whining to yourself...

Wow, dmcowen674, I have really lost respect for you in the past few weeks. First, your militant stance against mortgage lending (with no knowledge of how modern mortgage lending works) and now this. I supported you during that State of Georgia thing but now I wonder if you don't bring this upon yourself.

In a nutshell (hopefully no one else has already posted this ;) ) : this has nothing to do with public law. This is a private matter. A privately owned website that also happens to charge for advertising (that being its main source of income). You have no rights whatsoever to demand free advertising rights for your commercial site from them, and it would be against their interests to provide such to you as it would weaken their position with their paying sponsors. In short, if you want to use THEIR BANDWIDTH for your own commercial purposes, pay for it. Otherwise, please "STFU."

Unfortunately, Dave didn't exactly tell the whole story.

or you can get a X4 DSL Modem by Zoom. It has a Router in it and both USB port and Ethernet port live at the same time.

Ameritech Tech (moderator at DSL Reports)

So I'm just curious since you've done it twice so far, are you going to hop into this forum every time someone's looking for a new modem and recommend that one, like you've done in the Pacbell forum, the Earthlink forum, the Qwest forum, among others? Let me guess...can that modem be bought at the URL in your sig?

So apparently Dave has been hawking his DSL modems all over the place and quite frequently, too. Busy beaver, eh?

BTW....that thread can be seen here.

Heck, I didn't even see this line:

it's no wonder the Internet will be done and over before it even gets a chance to really get going.

At what point does "the Internet" stop being in its infancy? When do we stop saying that it's "just taking off" or "hasn't become mainstream"? When do we stop coddling it and treating it as something special that needs to be nurtured and encouraged to grow, and given special favors to make sure it doesn't go away? If the Internet can't survive based on the merits of the good things we get from it, should it keep living? It's over 30 years old for Pete's sake!

See that thread here.

Look at the rest of each of the threads where they talk about other Modems like Speedstreams and Westells that the people can't do things that they would like to do. It's simple pointing out there is a choice. I started with the word OR doesn't that mean a Choice? Isn't that what you do in Forums OR is it an exclusive Private club for the Phone Companies only? Better stop talking about all of the other hardware in Networking or CPU etc etc, you can't talk about the differences or choice about an AMD or Intel. Better erase all the gazillion of threads that had these discussions. Better shut down the Forums themselves.

These people had the Modems they are trying to work with rammed down their throats by their ISP with NO CHOICE. There's your whole story.

Taking one line out of a bunch of threads is certainly the definition of taking out of context. You DALRider is the one not telling the whole story.

I could see this as being an innocent 'choices' post, but because you conveniently have a link to your store, which 'conveniently' sells the products you recommend... it is hard to not see that you're just trying to sell products. You didn't pay, you don't play.

You compain about "saying things that were not said anyway" but even in your new thread title, it's quite a stretch to claim that your ONE hyperlink being labelled spam implies that all hyperlinks are spam.

Besides, spam doesn't strictly refer to unsolicited commercial e-mail. Channel Flooding in IRC is often referred to as spamming. Sending useless IMs are often reffered to as spam. E-mail forwards, even non-commercial ones, are often referred to as spam.

You answered the fact in your own post. I didn't SEND anything. ONE static word is now spam.

YOUR link to YOUR COMMERCIAL WEBSITE in YOUR SIGNATURE is being called spam. It's not just "ONE static word." It is a very specific case. These days spam refers to ANYTHING considered annoying.

so you are arguing semantics over the word spam...
the real issue is you trying to sell your stuff in a way that is not allowed on this site.

quote from their faqs:
" Q: LINKS in posts, sigs etc. (#6498)
A: To bring some uniformity to what we allow and don't allow in the way of promotion and self-promotion, here are guidelines.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posting in the forums encouraging others to join another site is tolerated once, IF the poster is not personally involved with that site.

For example: "Widget.com has a new custom news service, click here".

URLs in sigs: Adding a link such as "my favorite website" to your sig is acceptable, again,

IF the poster is not personally involved with that site (ie, not working for or with them etc.)

and the site is not sleazy, overtly commercial, or in the same line of business as us.

Links to non-profit websites are fine.

Links to helpful sites that are in a business related to DSLR are acceptable above forums, in faqs or in posts as long as the link does not get re-posted or continually mentioned."

seems pretty damn cut and dry to me.

Until there is a definition of spam that embodies all perceived manifestations your definition is no more correct than theirs. Spam hasn't been just about email for a long while.

maybe you should read this

Q: You can't tell me what I can or can't say! (#4720)
A: Well, if you've already seen the item above this one, (What are the rules on posting?), then you have your answer. But if you didn't, here's an outstanding and informative response by 2kmaro to an anonymous user, who said,
"I'll post whatever I want. This is a public website with public forums. These arbitrary rules are bullshit that some dweeb thought up to stroke himself over. Free speech is a right under the Constitution's Bill Of Rights, and any publicly accessible website that hosts forums is just that, public, and subject to all the laws and rights granted to citizens of the United States."
(The post also had some additional ranting and swearing in it.)

Response by 2kmaro:
I'm going to let your post stand - for all of it's obvious bravery.
Now, this is not a PUBLIC website - it is privately owned and operated and just like your own trailer park residence, there are rules established by the owner. Like any website that offers the public the opportunity to post their comments, there are rules. These rules are commonly called Terms of Service. Here at DSLR they are published here:
»/terms.html
They are further defined through several site FAQs:
On 'Censorship'
Rules of Posting

If you read the Terms of Service, you'll note that it states very plainly in words that most literate people can read and understand, that once you post it here it becomes the property of the site and from that point on you have no control over what happens to it: deleted, edited, trashed, praised or whatever. In other words, you just made a donation to DSLR without reservation.

You speak of not having the "nerve" to stand up for what you really believe and what America stands for. Well, I haven't figured out the "what America stands for" part of that, but at least I had the nerve to post under my normal user ID and not come crawling in here anonymously leaving a trail of belly slime as I did so. You obviously have a real problem with the site rules here.

As a moderator I am often called upon to help people solve the problems they bring with them to the DSLR forums. I believe I can help you with yours: take your attitude, shove it where the sun don't shine and toddle off to some other site to spread your pasture droppings.

Since the person starting this thread has some inkling of the concept of respecting the rules of others when visiting in their house, we'll leave the post in view. But locked.

Next he'll claim they're being racist or they're discriminating against him because he's 1/64th american indian.

No, it turned into them trashing on him because he's part of a different distributed computing team. Mcowen jumped on that like it was what he MEANT to say the whole time and should have been obvious to everyone. I didn't read any further in the thread in DC that was an attempt to replace this one; I don't understand the flocking reflex or how somebody that screwed up big time and committed a crime and got away scott free has become a folk hero.

Note I said flocking reflex, not instinct, and I'll explain in case anyone considered telling me that's the wrong word. Instinct is bred into you and usually has a good reason. Reflexes can be learned, even dumb ones.
