At the request of Evadman, here is details of my in-car MP3 computer :)

The specs of the computer are:

P3 500
128MB RAM
4gb HDD (running XP, and Winamp)
8gb HDD (for all music, in removable hdd rack)
MSI mATX motherboard, with onboard sound/vid
USB-Ethernet adapter, for network hookup
Compaq iPAQ for controlling the music

Custom made enclosure (Old pic of, it currently doesn't have any PCI cards, because they were causing the computer to stop for a second when they moved in the slots)
iPAQ for controlling
View from driving seat
Closeup of the iPAQ

Controlling Winamp using a slightly modified Snowcrash default theme. It runs as plugin on Winamp, and via Internet Explorer on the PocketPC. If you want, I can email you the modified HTML files :)

I currently just have the iPAQ sitting in the standard cradle, which is screwed down near the gear stick. I am hopefully going Bluetooth or Wi-Fi with the computer, and iPAQ, so I can go a few metres from the car, and still be able to control the music :)

MDF = good for speaker boxes. How hot does the system get in that zero airflow box?

This is mk3 of the in-car computer, and mk2 for the box!

First in-car computer was a 233, with a 4mb drive, in a standard AT desktop case, placed in the boot, controlled by a cut down keyboard, in about the same place (however in my previous car)

Mk1 box was a few months ago, the box sounded crap with the sub (sizes were wrong, and the bass was not right). Mk2 icmp3, at the same time, was the internals, as pictured above (pci network/vga, onboard sound, p2 400)

Mk2 box, and mk2 computer then came, with the sizes measured and identicle to the sub box I bought for my first car.

Mk3 computer came about 6 weeks ago, when I was pissed off with the stopping music! :)

As for heat, I have not measured any temperatures, but Mk2 was working fine after 8hrs of driving almost non-stop :)

Um, actually, it's on the right side of the steering wheel :)

Technically, you cannot fault me in that comment :)

the brake and the gas which side are they on?
Shifting with the left hand when most people are right handed must cost a lot of gears.

Clutch, Brake, Accelerator (gas)

And as I'm from the UK, i've always driven right hand drive cars ;) I don't think that shifting with left hand when right handed is too much of a hassle for most people, because it's not like you need massive amounts of power to shift gears.

And, over here, most people learn to drive in a manual car, so they are taught to change gear, and do it with left hand, from as soon as they start to learn. There are only a few people in comparison, who learn to drive an Automatic. Over here, if you learn in an auto, you can only drive an auto, to drive a manual, you must retake your test. If you learn to drive in a manual, however, then you can drive either (as auto's are easier that manuals) :)

but where's the LCD for the visualization effects from winamp? :D

I have not found a way to get the visualisations on the PocketPC yet, however, I will be soon writing my own custom app, to interface with Snowcrash on the PC, so that I can have my own layout etc, and I will find a better place to mount it, and i'll try to figure out how to get a visualisation on the screen too ;):)

Unless, of course, anyone has like a 5" LCD they would like to donate to the project? ;)

Garry :)
