Well, I guess...I'm still in a dilema. NetMD's are newer, but I think the benefits of mp3's are pretty great. I don't listen to more than like 30 songs @ a time anyways...sooo.. :S Any more opinions? I will buy it in about a week or two.

Wow, interesting post. My younger brother is in the same situation of what to ask for, for his Birthday coming in about 2 weeks. He doesn't know which to ask for. I'll have to keep up to date on this post to advise him. Keep the arguments coming!!

Just today I bought a MZ-N505...this the entry level NetMD by sony....

and i am returning it tomorrow and waiting until there is a Windows version of the Ipod.

Reasons

1- Install the Sony OpenMG software. Then you have to "import" your mp3's into the software library if you want to add them to a disk....no problem...however, took me a while to see what it was really doing.
I store my mp3s in my documents\music...OpenMG was making a copy of the file and encrypting it and putting it in its own directory. I have 3gigs worth of mp3's on the machine, if I used this method I would need twice the storage space to be able to add any song to an MD on the fly.

2- It seems to have a problem with Mp3s sampled at over 128 or 192...haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet. When I rip cd's I usually sample them very high, maybe at 228, it sounds crazy, but I don't worry about space, just don't like crappy music quality.

3- The OpenMG software crashes every so often.

4- Because sony is using encryption and other rules relating to digital rights and all that crap, a song can only be copied or "checked out" as is call 3 times. if you want to have it on another md, you have to "check in" the file and then it allows you to added to another disc.

I am dissapointed since i like MD's, my sister has a regular md and i think its great....

hope this helps, feel free to PM if you have any questions

I have a MD player, and i would say go with the mp3 player. Granted mine is 2 years old and they have come a long way since then, mp3 is still what i'd prefer. Even with the 40 sec skip protection, it still will skip. You also should get a longer battery life out of an mp3 player.

MD - personally, I'm waiting until I can scrap together enough money so that i can get a Sony MZ-S2 (the sports NetMD one) . . . I don't know, I think it's cooler technology! Now only if I wasn't so damn broke . . ..😱
