I stayed up till about two to try and watch it. In the end I fell asleep though. I'm a failure.

My co-worker got up to see it, hauled his telescope outside as well. He was planning on taking pictures, but the camera he was going to use wouldn't work, and it's never ever failed him before. Weird. Then the moon went behind clouds and trees just before the full eclipse. So he ended up going to bed. And I didn't get any pictures to see. :(

As I got up for work this morning and heard a Weather Channel person say "full lunar eclipse" I hustled out to the back yard. Sure enough, very low in the western Texas sky, barely above my roof line, was a reddish disk. Cool. Then clouds rolled across. When I got to work (about 6:35) I could see about 25% of the disk returning. Then the Sun came up and ruined it. No pics, though. and no telescope.

I'm always wake up about 5am (mountain time), why I don't know, but it sucks. Except this morning it was perfect for viewing the eclipse, before trying to get back to sleep.

I assume this is the email you recieved(or something very close)
>> > Two moons on 27 August*
>> >>
>> >>*27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for...*
>> >>
>> >>Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It
>> >>will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will
>> >>cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be
>> >>sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth
>> >>has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
>> >>
>> >>Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it
>> >>again.

These emails have been going around since 2004. In 2003, Mars & Earth were the closest to each other:
"At 5:51 a.m. EDT on Aug. 27, 2003, Mars will be within 34,646,418 miles (55,758,006 kilometers) of Earth. This will be the closest that Mars has come to our planet in nearly 60,000 years."

Mars will never look as big as the full moon!

Be prepared for the next one though... Feb 21, 2008 :)
