... well, not quite correct, the hd's started making noises, mostly due to starting and stopping again due the under-voltage...

... but does remember the bang when 2 psu's and a nic went poof due to lightning... :frown:

The most common noises is from fans and cd/dvd-players, the latter can sometimes sound like the player is chewing or something instead of reading, so if using cd/dvd at the time maybe a part of the disk was chewed loose so went poof...
I had a problem with the 5v line on my TruePower 380 too, was running about .5v low, resulting in my hard drives not spinning up :/
I couldnt afford to replace it with anything but a el-cheapo PSU, so a volt mod later im running the 12v/5v/3.3v rails at 12.3v/5.2v/3.4v and its been working quite happily ever since :)

A friend of mine once bought a computer over to me for investigation - she said that it literally exploded and poured out smoke when she tried to turn it on. (!!) I figured that the PSU blew and everything was toasted, but I tried booting it up just to be sure. Surprisingly, it still POST'ed, and seemed to be working fine - until I switched it off, and another cap inside the PSU exploded, RIGHT NEXT TO MY EAR. Sure enough, a bunch of thick white smoke came pouring out the back and I had to leave the windows open for a long while to get rid of the smell.

Being curious, I later opened up the PSU and two empty capacitor "shells" fell out. Apparently, they blew themselves off the PCB. At least it didn't all go to waste... I salvaged the 80mm fan ;)

My neigbors PSU blew like this and when he brought if over to my house, we fired it up and it started to post. I then saw sparks shooting from the video card and then from between the ram. Turned it off but it was too late, the ENTIRE system was toast. I opened the PSU and it looked like a bunch of stuff got zapped so I am assuming that the resisters that limit the amount of jiuce that get shot to the mobo was dead and allowed too much to go, thus zapping it all! Maybe I am wrong but that is all I could think of.

i "popped" my antec truepower 430 as well; but that was 100% operator error. i daisy chained 4 fans on the fan only connectors, when 3 is the max it can handle. i didnt know that at the time though :(
"POP"!!! *shut down system and didnt power it back up until i bought a new PSU* :(

GLeeM, any word on your problem?

I am curious because Sunday my PC made a loud pop, and shut itself off. I took a look inside, no signs of a bad cap on mobo or video card. I could not smell anything from the PSU or case.
I turned it back on, and have played hours of CS:S and prime95 stable for 30+ hours! Smartguardian shows my voltages within spec. The 12V fluctuates from 11.83 to 11.9, but thats it, I believe it did that before the pop.
This dang PC is not even a month old, wonder if I should try returning the PSU or not. The shop will likley try and ship it to Enermax to repair. Open it and check it out will void any warranty....argh. Wonder if there is a way to test the PSU? Man I would love to open it up and look around.

I had almost forgotten about this little nagging worry.

@MTSteel
The computer has been working fine, running 24/7 under full Distributed Computing load.

I never did open the PSU to check that out.

I am perplexed as to what made the "POP". It just seems that something had to be damaged with that loud of a noise, but it keeps running maxed out.

And with good temps:
CPU temps - 45C - 113F
probe on heatpipe - 36C - 98F
thermometer behind case - 99F
