OT: Job Offer

Hey all, a little off topic, but I'm happy and I want to share! For those that were involved in the Seti mini-race, you know that I disappeared for a few days as I moved from Rolla to Minneapolis. I'll be graduating with my PhD in a week and my wife and I moved early since she had a job. Of course, I didn't even have an offer.

Well, long story short, I've interviewed with 2 companies here for senior scientist positions, 3M and Medtronic. I just got a phone call from the manager at Medtronic and they have already decided to make me the job offer, paperwork is in Fedex's hands and should arrive tomorrow!(I was told to expect it to take a couple of weeks and I interviewed on monday)

So, based on hints, the offer should be upper 70s low 80s plus full benifits on day 1. Now the only problem I'll have is that I haven't had a real job in about 8yrs! Not sure how I'm going to handle this. I'm also now going to put the pressure on 3M to make a decision as Medtonic wants my answer by next Friday.

So, I'll finally have my 1st real job just before my 30th birthday! (it is in February) I've been in school the whole time! I've had 4 plant trip interviews in the last year and this is the first hit I've gotten and my first offer so I'm exciting....Anyway, sorry if I'm repeating myself I'm just really excited.

For any interested and still reading, the job is a materials research position. I'll be working on seals for feedthrough wires on pacemakers and related objects. They want to be producing 5-10million of these seals within the next 3yrs and haven't yet decided what glass to use. In large part, that will be my job. To develop the composition and method to get these glass seals into production.

Ok, it's enough already. My wife, daughter and I are going to head out to dinner to celebrate in a few minutes. Just wanted to share!

I just worked on a job for 3M earlier in the week. Not sure where all their plants are located but i know the one we do work for is in Minnesota. Where ever they mold their plastic parts.

All you young guys and gals out there, look for a career where you can make a difference. In the end, that will be more fulfilling than climbing the ladder or money, etc.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I was slowly starting to come down until I recieved the big packet from them a while ago, and was very pleasantly surprised.😀 So I'm floating again, but it's great, and I'll enjoy it while I can.

So now some big decisions to make over the next few days including how to prod 3M to make a decision possibly a little faster than they want. And I'll need to avoid alcohol for a few days to take the drug test. But now that I have an offer in hand a lot of pressure has disappeared.
 
3M is a big company and won't be prodded easily. Their Human Resources department is a slow, plodding beast. You can't push them - no leverage.
Take the Medtronic offer, give them 3 years of total dedication, then see about 3M if it still looks like greener pastures.
Don't worry about the drug test and alcohol. Five hours is sufficient unless you are falling down drunk. They don't care if you drink, just if you are drunk.
Enjoy the next few weeks, then enjoy being employed. 🙂

Thanks, I've really been thinking along these lines.(it is nice to see other people agree!) I'm planning my letter being more of a "what's up" kind of thing to the researcher that I interviewed with. They didn't have to interview me so I feel like I should at least keep the informed of my situation.(he's the guy who came up with "Indiglo" that Timex used for what it is worth) And I'm not sure at this point that I would select the 3M position all things being equal. I think I just liked being at Medtronic more than 3M during my interviews. So we shall see.

That is also good info about the testing. I wasn't sure how long it would take for those things to clear my system for the tests. I've never done drugs so I just have to worry about alcohol.
