OT: Is Newegg Crazy ?

Or is this a phish ?

I received my Newegg ' Hot Deals ' email this morning , and before I can open it, there is a pop-up window wanting my Newegg ID and password ?

I gotta believe this is a scam ..

Anyone else ?

I don't know if Newegg is crazy, but this is OT rather than Hot Deals.

Sorry. I tried to inform you of the move but
1. You don't accept PMs
2. Your email wouldn't accept messages from my domain (gmail).

I got that as well. I will be removing myself from Newegg's newsletter. I'm not going to log into my e-mail then log in to see some ad.

*Edit* I had to end Firefox via task manager as well to get out of the stupid login box.

Abel007,

I can't believe it's legit .. Newegg can't be doing something this stupid..

Unfortunately, I can see a lot of people ( .. not the astute people from Anandtech ) falling for this ..

What I could see of the email in my preview window, looked
like the real deal ..

It's unbelievable how insidious some of these email scams are becoming ..

I think it is a legit e-mail from Newegg. They always send out a newsletter on Tuesdays. Considering we haven't received another Newegg newsletter today then it further verifies it. Hopefully they just screwed something up.

Also, the links in the newsletter goto the same domain. If I don't display images in gmail then I can still click on the links. They goto http://promotions.newegg.com just like the previous ones have. Upon going to the link is where the login is being required.

Glad I saw this thread, thought my browser was messed up. Hopefully it's just a screw up on their part.

If you click cancel enough, it will finally let you close down your tab for your email, but yes, everyone is receiving this so I think it's just something that Newegg messed up on.
If you log into their site and click on the email, it still will not let you log in (your Newegg login creds don't work.. looks like they need other login creds) so there should be another email or they'll fix it for the next "hopefully".
I'm sure they've received a lot of angry responses concerning this already.

Edit: Go to their website and click on the "Check out the Latest E-Mail Promotions" and you'll get the same login request.

Entering your loggin info in a non-secure URL is a super no-no ...

There is no reason for them to need your log-in info unless you are completing a transaction.
And this would not be the way to get it. ( pop-up window )
If it's legit, why can't you close the window without entering info ?

If they need your log in - they will provide a link to a secure URL ..

It's probably a permissions issue on their server that hosted the pictures. The server was asking us for newegg's login so we could see the pics, not for our personal login to newegg

We have a winnarrr.

I just kept hitting cancel and it went away. Though some of the images wouldn't appear correctly, it does appear to be a legit email.

Yep, this was my thought as well. I think its just a screwup on Newegg's part. I wouldn't read a whole lot more into this.

It seems they started a new super deal of the day type thing for people like us, I'm hoping this is just a hiccup in the security for that deal page. I havent checked my email yet for the link though.

i think they forgot to pay their akamai bill so akamai will not host their content, so thats why its asking for login/pass, cuz neweggs is bouncing back.

Yeah, I kept getting this with Sony Rewards site a couple weeks ago... would constantly ask for your username and password... each time I hit ESC, another image failed to load... many images later, the dialogs finally went away 😛.
