My connection has been down since ~11:30pm last night, 20 hours ago. Everything provided by my cable company (TV, internet, telephone) is dead.

I'm at my GF's at the mo, so hence why I can get on the net, but it will be a while until my computers can transmit. They said it should have been up at 12, then 2, then they said 7pm, and it's now 7:30, and still not working. And, as I could not get to the internet, I couldn't even send out the stats script to anyone to run, so there will be no stats until my connection comes back, whenever that will be.

Take care guys, and hope to be back online soon, as both my SB and ChessBrain production is hurting terribly!!

funny, i've never had problems with NTL apart from them being stupid and not charging me enough (never charged for 2nd cable box, not supposed to still have us on half price 1024 etc) 🙂

Thats the thing I used to find most annoying when I was with ntl...... when they went down, they went down in style....... adsl has the occasional hic-up but it lasts for only about as long as a real hic-up session lasts.

Its more than just style man, its like, breaking news: "NTL Service down across country, service expected to return to normal in...2...er...3...er....15...no....72 hours".

My NTL connection was down for the 7th time in 18 months. I mean thats down for over 2 hours. If i include anything less than 2 hours then we are looking at like 25+ downtimes :|

They are crap, they are really really crap :|
 
I personally haven't had much trouble with NTL ,occasional 1/2 day outages ,but I know many people who've had far worse & then had engineers around only to make matters worse!

Do you not have any (affordable, reliable, and available) alternatives? That's got to suck. 🙁

<-- stuck on slow dialup, but at least the ISP and phone lines are pretty reliable, so it's there when I want it (unless there's a power outage, thanks to the damn unreliable power company).

The only real alternative would be ADSL, but that means you've got to have a BT phone line, and not all exchanges are converted yet (in fact, not many are really!). Cable from ntl is £24.99 for 600/128, ADSL is £29.99 for 512/256.

There is only 2 cable companies, and it's one or the other.

Not like America, where there seems to be 4 DSL and 4 cable companies all in one area to choose from, there's really only 1 or 2 choices.

What about Blue Yonder?

To quantify what I said earlier ,since Aguust last year I've probably had 3-4 1/2 days outages ,but I also have had many more smaller outages.Though most of the time its ok!

Nope, im three metres too far away from my local exchange to receive adsl (My neighbour has adsl but i cant get it, typical ye :roll😉

Telewest (The only other mainstream cable company in the UK) do not cable my area due to NTL's court restrictions, which state telewest cannot cable my area due to the fact NTL 'got there first', and Tele2's wireless services in my area, went into liquidation, were bought by a company named Liberty Broadband, who have also gone into liquidation, and do not offer services anymore. If your not a previous customer you cannot order wireless anymore.

Assimilator, the engineer came out on Sat morning and discovered the amplifier specifcally for my house had not switched itself back on after the outage. He replaced the box to find out it was an incorrect box, which made matters even worse. When he finally got the right one and installed it, he came back to my house and went to close the box for ntl's cables outside my house. As he did this he caught the wire and cut through it, which he then wanted ME to pay £50 to replace the entire line, trying to accuse ME of damaging the cable, which I then argued about for 20 mins, when he finally called another engineer to help replace the entire line.

Only took them 8 hours in total to sort it out, and im STILL having problems :|

It depends on what part of America you're in; where I live, I can choose from 0 DSL companies, 1 cable company - Cablevision, for a little over US$50 / month (any good money exchange rate converter thingies online? 😉) - and 1 wireless ISP of which I'm within range, but blocked by a friggin huge hill between my place and their Access Point (maybe that would work if I got some 300 foot tower at my end, but then I'd have to get it cleared with the FAA first). Of course, not having a job helps narrow my choices, too, because my parents don't think it's worthwhile to pay more than $20 / month for internet access. 🙁

Ditto, I can't afford to pay for internet access, and my parents wont pay any more than 20 bones for Dial Up :|

I think there's one cable company here, like 3 or 4 dial ups, no DSL that i'm aware of, and I think 1 wireless, maybe. 🙁
 
Actually you can get ADSL for much much cheaper than that price. I'm with Plus net (aka. Free-Online and Force9) and only pay £22.99 /month for my 512k/256k connection and if you want they even do a cheaper option that's £2 cheaper per month but doesn't provide you with a 'real' IP so some things like ICQ/Kazaa/etc. may have problems. I was quite lucky in some ways as the place I am staying now just had the exchange enabled the same month I moved in..... timing hey 😉

Edit: They've just lowered their prices actually, so now its £21.99/month for normal access and £18.99/month for the crippled 512/256 option. They even have a referal service so any people you recommend to sign up means you have money taken off your bill simply by quoting your username during sign-up - such as 'ng72js15' (hint hint 😉)

The only drawback is the 'activation' fee and the need to be on one of the enabled exchanges (over 2/3 are in the country) but apart from that I would happily prefer to give my money to BT rather than pay for what is a sub-standard service from a cowboy company such as ntl - have they even got 24 hour customer support yet?

2nd Edit: If you know which exchange you are connected to, you can check if its enabled or how close to being enabled at this site.
 
Yeah in actuallity internet access in America lags behind the UK. Cable just became availible at my place in April bring the area to a total of 1 cable, 0 DSL, a couple ISDN and about a million dial-up providers. So I'm stuck paying $42.95 for 1500/256 cable (actually since I work for them I get a discount😉).
