OMG!!! While browsing the forums here, I kept hearing these annoying soft noises that sounded like a door closing in my room - almost like a cupboard door. This last time though, it sounded like the cupboard was being slammed. I whip around in my chair (scared poopless), and right behind me I catch the last split second of my largest tarantula, Jez, falling back down inside of her aquarium! :Q She has evidently learned that she's big enough to give the lid on top of her home enough of a push to try and squeeze out... She'd been trying this entire time and finally got close enough to just about escape. To think - not even a week ago my girlfriend was sleeping in here when she was in town during Christmas break and I kept reassuring her - don't worry about Jez, she can't get out... :Q!!!! Needless to say, I have piled two books on top of each of the hinged sides on the lid (The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring on one side, The Two Towers and The Return of the Ring on the other side). Hopefully this'll prevent any future escapee acts by her...

Phew... My heart's still pounding from that scare. What would I have done if I would've fallen asleep a couple of hours ago like I wanted to and she had gotten out?!?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

EDIT: And this is coming from me - who sleeps less than 5 feet away from two tarantulas and a piranha! 😉
 
Keeping 2 tarantulas and a piranha in the same tank is cruel..

p.s. Tarantulas aren't very venomous are they ??? I thought they just gave a nasty bite ?

Actually with that smart of a spider, you might consider opening the books face down on top of the aquarium so it can get in some quality reading. 🙂 🙂 hehe, fun stuff
 
Maybe take those Tolkien books off the top and put some HTML/JAVA books up there instead - I hear that many spiders like reading about the Web. 😛

Reminds me when the time my Oscar (type of fish) jumped over the fish tank and landed on the floor, next came a high pitch 500db scream from my sister. 😀

eh? tarantula? i think my cat would be scared of one of those. just maybe. damn whiny cat.
 
Both her and my other tarantula are on a stable diet of a couple dozen large crickets/week between the two of them. Toss my brother's scorpion into the mix, and we buy a lot of crickets as food around here.

When my wife and I were dating I was heavy into fish (African Chiclids mainly), one day she came out ofthe spider room of the pet store with this huge tarantula crawling around in her hands. Came close to ending both a beautiful relationship (20+ yrs and growing strong) and the life of one of the nastiest looking creatures this side of Phyllis Diller in the morning.....


Had a fish once that probably would have taken the tarantula in a fair fight though... 🙂 Called a Green Terror and ate just about anything you threw in the tank.

ahh fish.. now there is an animal I can handle. 🙂 I have a 55 gallon aquarium sitting next to me with several sharks and some passion fish. Fish are awesome. 🙂
 
Fish? I know all about fish too - here are a few pics of my "not-so-dangerous-fish", Hannibal, the piranha... He's about the size of a grown man's hand now (I was gonna say my hand, but I could be 3 years old and have tiny hands) 😉 I just can't keep a "normal" pet I guess.
