This is pretty interesting.

Picture of CPU and HSF

I decided to install smoothwall on an old K6/2 233 system that was doing nothing but crunching SETI for me. I went to shut it down and noticed the top of the case over the CPU was a good 120 degrees. (it is a desktop case, kinda in the style of a Packard Bell ) I could only touch it for a second.

I did not want to loose the SETI units that SETI Driver had not sent, so I went in and sent them to OK ( and they got sent. YAY! ) Then shut the box off.

The CPU fan failed. Figures.

The CPU HSF was too hot to touch. I was unable to get my fingers on the bracket to take the HSF off for a few minutes because it was way to hot. In about 5 minutes it cooled down enough to release the clamp, but I could not get the HSF off the CPU.

I ended up getting it off with a sharp blow with a chisel. As you can see in the picture, it looks like the CPU fused in some way to the HSF. Nifty.

I am now cleaning out the case, and will try to get it up and running later tonight. I assume that since I was able to shut it down from inside windows that the CPU is alright. Or at least not fatily wounded. ( assuming I did not damage it seperating it. ) I will LYK :)

Didn't you know that you were suposed to use a compound between the processor and the heatsink.
For those processors I use Prolong, Z-Max, or (can't remember the other.) You shouldn't use FTPE stuff like Slick-50 the government made them take their claims off boxes and advertzement.
This prevents these bonding of the metal problems that we see here in these cases.

edit: Oh, ya, DuraLube is the other

PS Did anyone read the article in Tomshardware where they post an article of a a guy that builds this premo machine to change VHS to DVD and the guy has all this equipment in a server case with 5 5 1/4 in bays and 5 3 1/2 inch bays and all sorts of stuff totaling like $3,800 AND INSIDE THE CASE IS A 300 WATT POWER SUPPLY. I CAN'T believe the sales guy at Mwave took the order over the phone and then suggested the the case cause the guy didn't know and then a 300 watt power supply, (no mention of the brand either.) My jaw droped to the floor. $69 dollars for a server case suggests to me that the PS is cheapo also.

Hey hey, another Antec System Fan user! (The big black fan that blows out the I/O panel). How you like it? I've got 2 in my rig :)

Good choice of firewall there :)

I had a K6-2 350 whose fan died. The chip was still alive (and still works today) after 3 months at around 70 deg C for 8 hours a day.! :D

Hey, I used to pry those aluminum heat spreaders off my K6 procs. You can boost a 300 to 450 or 500 that way if you have a good chip... Put the HS right on the core with any kind of paste and it's going to be better than just putting it on that stupid metal 'hood'. Besides, it's kinda fun getting a knife or screwdriver under there and prying the sucker off and then seeing if it still works.
You do have to be careful enough not to break any of the little surface mounted doohickies under that hood, but with a reasonable amount of care it can be done.
