My cable provider has switched modems from COM21 to Terayon, so I went and picked one up. They said they had raised the DL/UL caps, so I cruised by Microsoft and downloaded some big files. My DL's used to max out at 200-210 KB's, just hit 680+ KB's consistently from MS. :D

WOW!

I used to get pretty good download speeds, but the last few months I'm lucky to get over 50KB/sec. :(

using Time Warner/Road Runner cable. A friend a few blocks away has digital cable, his new modem connects at 100mb instead of 10, and he is getting 250kb to 300kb a sec. :(

Whoa... I'm using RoadRunner/Time Warner, and when I first got it I saw 300KB/sec consistently. Now I see 150Kb/sec; every so often I get 250 or so. Still not bad at all!

That's over 5Mbps :Q They'd have to have 1 T3 for each 10 users or 1 OC-3 for each 30.

My DSL is now in envy.

See what you can get at dslreports.com

It's Shaw Cable, I think they are Canucks, I'm in a suburb of Houston. They took over my local Cable service just as to the internet part.

Alex, that's cos you live out in the sticks :p

My cable line on DSLReports speed test just got:

** Speed 563(down)/121(up) kbps **
(At least 11 times faster than a 56k modem)

Not bad for paying for 64(down)/32(up) kbps! but i am getting the 512(down)/128(up) kbps service, don't ask me how, but i'm definately not complaining!!

And on with the 56k software modem in the Athlon 1.2GHz sitting next to me (connected at 50.6kbps) i get:

** Speed 41(down)/26(up) kbps **
About modem speed!

And on the 56k external modem connected to my computer (at 42.0kbps) i get:

** Speed 35(down)/26(up) kbps **
About modem speed!

I'll stick to the cable modem thanks! ;)

I'm using the same provider as scorch (actualy, I think we're on the same node) and I normaly hit 200-250k/s almost every download (unless I'm downloading from a realy slow server). Weird how that works ;)

mboy, dang you and your OOL. :) I would have them currently if Adelphia hadn't bought out Cablevision in this area. :( But Adelphia has put us on their business backbone which currently isn't actually oversubscribed, and I'm getting 3000/128. :D

WOW, Shaw cable expanded to houston?

I use shaw cable, and its pretty fast, but not that fast.

They are a Canadian company based out of Calgary Alberta. Funny they would expand to houston, Calgary and houston have a lot in common. Big, Rich, Oil/Gas/Ranching cities.. (there is ranching around houston, not?)

Calgary is home to over 300 Oil and Gas company headquaters (at least Canadian headquaters of some companies). Its a VERY rich city.. at least on canadas level.

Hmm, I am going to have to complain to my ISP.

I would have figured a 100Mb connected to a 1Gb fiber to a OC3 line would have scored above

1502/65.

:(
