The irony is that the "impactor" may be based on the Kenetic energy kill weapons developed for the SDI program that were intended to bring down ICBMs without the use of explosives.
 
The head of the Astronomy Dept. at a local collage recently built an observatory with a 20" Torus telescope. One of the main projects is searching for Near Earth Asteroids.
I was there a couple of nights ago & he was showing me & another member of our astro club how it operated. Pretty amazing!
As a matter of fact, on my way home that night was when i 1st heard about the latest near miss.
