The company I work at was purchased by a much larger company in October of 2003 and despite assurances that there were no plans for layoffs from the new ownership (riiiight... my BS meter was pegged that day
rolleye.gif
) they've been making cuts since shortly after. My office has gone from about 90 users at the time of the purchase to 35 today and although it's not been announced it is a given that it will close in the near future. That said, I'm soon to be a site admin without a site to support and I was officially given notice of that today. First I had to ground my SETI fleet and now I've been grounded as well. :(

Although it's not really a shock or anything I can't help being a little bitter. I've worked for this company since December of 1985 and have gone through several misguided ownership and inept management changes as well as the past few years with no salary or cost of living increases (management bonuses continued however). So after 18 1/2 years of loyal service I'll soon be out looking for work while the top brass that put this company into this terrible financial situation in the first place are either still enjoying their 6-digit salaries or yanking the cord on their golden parachutes on the way out the door. :| :disgust:

Oh well, the way I look at it they gave notice to a good employee today and their loss will be my next employer's gain.

Indeed... don't let the bastages grind you down. As long as it's an employer's market, it will always be 'what have you done for me recently'. Sorry to hear your news, but it sounds like you have the right attitude to land on your feet running! Good luck! :)

Wanna code some stats with me? ;)

Dasm, I hate to hear that! I've been here for 21 years and
there is a new IS manager taking over. Bringing several of
his guys from his old company to ours. Looks like they will
soon take over. I am just trying to stay out from under the
microscope. I think that as long as my department is
profitable and efficient, I will not have much to worry
about. Hopefully....

Best wishes to you and yours Robor
companies today don't seem to care how loyal/good a person is
It's all about the dollar .

Don't get me wrong, there are a few still out there that are old school,
But What comes around goes around.

I got to watch those who fired me (out of spite, knew they were getting fired and took out the two top drivers) get canned the next day
and a company of 3 managers a bookkeeper 35 solicitators and 12 drivers
get reduced to 1 manager 2 solisitators 1 driver who works 4 hours 2 times a week
they offered me my job back after a 2.00+ cut,I told they "no thanks" a few weeks later
they started the reductions.I hear they are going out of business next month.

good luck bro

That utterly sucks the slime off a donkey's... well -- use your imagination! :|

DASM!

Rob - may I make a suggestion? If you need to "hit the pavement"... seriously -- go sell cars, and no -- I'm not kidding.
a few things happen.

You're not sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. (trust me - I've done it and it gets you nowhere)
You meet a sh*tload of people... many of whom are sympathetic. (networking)
You get a DEFINITE course in selling - (job search is "selling" oneself)
You actually get PAID for doing this crap... (rather handsomely at times)
You can sleep at night if you don't lie to people. (they actually appreciate that)
You can sell LOTS of cars because -

a. People aren't intimidated by a "regular" guy.
b. People identify with being "taken off at the knees" by an ungrateful company.
c. You KNOW you aren't staying in the industry... it's just temporary - so there's no pressure.

In the worst case, you've honed your "people skills" to a fine edge - you've made a crapload of money, and now you're ready to go back to... a computer? Hard to say - but I can say this... I went from an unemployed ex-geek-management loser, to a salesman, and am now a sales manager at my dealership. "Geeks" - do pretty well these days, particularly with "internet sales" - which each dealership has anymore. It's so different from regular "retail" that most "salesmen" types can't cope with it. Enter the geek - who types 85 wpm, knows how the entire computer system works, can do tech support, and write applications PLUS can sell cars to social misfits who rarely venture out from behind their terminal.

What could be better than that? ;)

You've been at that job almost as long as I've been alive, that's some dedication. They won't know what they're missing until you're gone.

I was about to say the same thing!

My dad actually 2 weeks ago left the job he's been working at since the week before I was born! New management took over there, and he'd had enough!

I'm sure someone with your experience and dedication won't have any problems in getting another job.

I'm glad you're looking at the good points about it, rather than the bad :)

Good luck!
