OT: 1700 tbred b & Hyperx just arrived - boosting main seti cruncher now

Currently running the old 2400+ at 12 x 175 with 6-2-2-2T timings.
All seems stable running seti like a B.O.O.H (obscure Meatloaf reference)

I want to see how far the 2400+ will go before swapping in the 1700.

Well the 2400 just isn't a very good overclocker... or something.

I want to go as fast as possible while maintaining very fast ram timings. The 2400+ runs fine this way up to about 2700+ speeds, I think I can get the same out of my new 1700 though so I'll be trying that.

Currently it's running the 1700+ at 11x 175fsb. I'll try and see how much more I can get out of it next.

heheh.. did I mention it's running seti and only 35C 😉

11x 180fsb @ 6-3-3-3T seems pretty stable at 1.75v core.

I'll try to get some more out of it - maybe drop the mult to 10x &... oops - getting some stability issues right now - need to reboot... L8r 😉

EDIT: ok, I raised the vcore a little and it's ok at 11.5 x 180 fsb with fast timings. It's running at 2075mhz seti going 100% and with the case closed up it's at 47C. Not bad, might let it run this way for a while now to see how it goes.

Still at 11x 180 6-2-2-2T

I have a thread in OC with some more details, this ram is suppsed to run 185 (370ddr) @ 6-2-2-2T and I just can't get it to do this.
I even lowered the mult to 7.5x!!

Also want to know about whether it's better to run in dual channel or not. If I put the ram in slots 1&2 will that keep it in single channel mode?
Is there any advantage to SC? Is there less latency?

Wiz, Make sure your Drivers\Bios are up to date. Also try taking the FSB up slow, i.e., 175 run seti overnight then raise to 178 run seti for the day, 181 run seti overnight ect.

Don't feel too bad, you're not the only one. My computer should be able to be overclocked (XP1700+ tbred B on an Epox 8RDA), but my Kingston ValueRAM has spoiled the party; I can't overclock very much at all without having it go unstable after a few days. :frown:

Blame my mom (the one in the family who worries about money all the time) for my cheapness, but I should have known by now to never buy cheap and crappy RAM. :disgust:

Yup, all drivers & bios are the best available.
Gonna try memtest86 and see what happens.

Thanks, I'll look into that - might just have some 486 size fans around here somewhere...

There is a tad more latency with DC mode but the higher bandwidth seems to make it worthwhile🙂 ,just! ,it only shaved about 5mins off my WU times.
And yeah SC mode is in slot1&2

Btw Prime95 is a far better tester & stresser of your rig than SETI is ,I find it can pick up errors straight away where SETI doesn't ,I've also found P 95 will get your cpu hotter than SETI by about a few degrees!

I've got a little fan on the chip just below the cpu now (the one with the big heatsink) - is that northbridge or southbridge?
Where's the other one located?

EDIT: just RTFM & found out where they are and which was which.

There's no heatsink at all on the southbridge - guess they didn't think it needed one.

EDIT: running 11x178 now - running prime95.

It's the same on my ASUS A7V8X, kt400, just the big heatsink on the northbridge and before i put a fan on you could burn your finger at 190 fsb :Q

Well Prime95 errored big time @ 12x175 so now I have it set to 11.5x178 and prime95 is happy.
I'll give 11x180 a try again in a few minutes.

Must admit I hadn't thought about that ,but doesn't the KT400 run hotter than the Nfrc2, or did I just imagine that?😕

Btw I don't think its really neccassary to have a HSF on the southbridge as that only handles ,sound,LAN,PCI etc whereas the N'bridge handles the CPU & RAM.

I touched the MCP chip (southbridge) and if I had to guess I'd say it was about 150F.
I can imagine a little cooling on there wouldn't hurt. Might not help at all, but it wouldn't hurt 😉

That big aluminum HS on the Northbridge just sits there and hopes to get some air movement - I think the design is OK for a moderate overclocker, but not for any extreme OC'ing.

I'll find out after my Ice Chip cooler arrives - copper hsf on the north and a copper hs on the south - while I'm in there I'll put some AS3 on them too.
Hopefully that will be tomorrow, or at the latest Friday.

I'm also building a system for a 17 YO daughter of a friend, it will look radical and will work well but just be a non-OC'ed 1800+
She is used to working on a P-166 so the raw power of an 1800+ will surely amaze her.
Look for the digital photos sometime in the next few days 😉

Nice upgrade for her😉

Hmm ,I might put an old Pentium fan on my Northbridge to see if that helps😉...thing is I liked the idea of having no fan there as my nfrc2 mbrd is a little quieter than my old KT266a mbrd was.
