Ostrich killed in revenge shooting
Friday, November 10, 2006

Two men will face trial after a drunken Halloween allegedly ended up in them taking violent revenge on an ostrich.

The incident began on Hallowwen night, when according to authorities, Timothy McKevitt, 19, and 20-year-old Jonathan Porter decided to break into an ostrich ranch near Half Moon Bay in California, along with some friends. Reports suggest that they wanted to look at the ostriches.

The ostriches, however, had other ideas.

One of the ostriches became enraged by the group's drunken ogling, and attacked them. Both McKevitt and Porter were injured in the ostrich attack ? including broken ribs ? and they ran away.

Bruised and humiliated by the ostriches, it seems they decided to take revenge ? and so they armed themselves with a rifle and a shotgun, and returned to the ranch. Once there, they shot one of the ostriches seven times, killing it.

Ut the ranch owner, Karen Schmidt, was able to track them down, after they were seen tearing down posters she had put up, offering a $2,300 reward for information about the crime. They reportedly confessed to her that's they'd comitted the crime.

The dead ostrich's name was Gaylord.

Schmidt says she is pleased she put in the effort to track down the killers, as Gaylord deserved justice. 'The ostriches are awesome to me,' she told the Half Moon Bay Review, 'even if they are pea-brains.'

McKevitt and Porter pleaded not guilty to the charges.
