Taken was also better than TDK. that being said, TDK was a good movie but it doesnt come close to how good batman begins was.

Nice of the academy to continue to refuse to accept that anything other than a traditional drama can be good. And they continue to make themselves more and more irrelevant to the average movie goer.

When were they ever relevant?

Still relevant since we are talking about it.

The Wrestler opens today in my city on a few screens. I am considering watching it, though I don't watch a lot of movies when they first come out anymore since I have a media room. But I am a fan of Rourke and Tomei both.

The Dark Knight is a great movie. I don't care what the Academy thinks. I think the Academy has lost touch with reality.

I saw Button and it's quite boring in some parts. I think people mistake boring with powerful and understated. Just because the movie doesn't explicitly tell you everything, doesn't mean it has some powerful message to deliver hidden in the scene. It was too long, and boring, and I was pretty disappointed because I did pay to see that one in the theatre.

I haven't seen Slumdog, Reader, or Doubt. I will definately check out all 3 on video. That is not a slight, I watch most movies on DVD.

You're right that's what they want, but their decisions still lack relevance. :)

Not true. It is still a great honour to be nominated. Of course winning is better :)

Otherwise why would the award persevere? If you look at dvd covers, they all proclaim loudly "Nominated for xx Academy Awards"

And yes, I thought Iron Man was better. Ledger is the only nod TDK should have gotten in any major category. For once I see eye-to-eye with the academy.

Frost/Nixon for Best Movie, Brad Pitt for Best Actor. Regardless, a weak year in movies yet again.

Meryl Streep gets nominated AGAIN as well. That makes 15 or 16 now I think, incredible.

And Slumdog Millionaire... heh... well they always have to throw a crappy, obscure Juno-type movie in there, don't they?

I thought it was very well done, and more deserving of an Oscar than Dark Knight. But hey, that's just me (and whoever came up with that list, apparently :p)..

He called it an obscure Juno type movie. Its not even close to that and I doubt he has even seen it, much less even knows what the movie is about.

I hope Slumdog wins best picture. it was the best movie i saw all year.

Also, while I haven't seen doubt, I've read that Streep and Hoffman more or less slept their ways through a crappy movie. And this is from respected critics. And whatever you want to say about the Academy vs the critics, all of them qualify for voting.

And I don't think The Reader stole TDK's spot. It stole Wall*E's spot.

I'm ok with that statement - it stole SOMEONE's spot, is the point. And so did Benjamin Button, probably.

Regardless, it's pretty naive to think that Winslet DiCaprio, Blanchett, etc. don't perform well above average.

They do. That's why they should get actor nominations. But performing well above average in a mediocre movie should not merit it being nominated for best picture. Although Leo really isn't related to my rant I guess since he was in Revolutionary Road and not nominated.

I slept through most of Kung-Fu Panda. Lame, derivative story, actually.

No argument there! I simply thing TDK got a bit overhyped by the macbook pro/myspace generation. I personally felt RDJr's performance in both Iron Man and Tropic Thunder to be superb, the former being better than TDK in the overall grand scheme of things. I enjoyed TDK greatly, by all means, it's just far from the cats meow.

Again, the taste of the average movie goer needs at least one venue where their opinions are irrelevant. They pretty much have the run of the box office, determining that some 88% of what is released over here is utter tripe.

So be happy that you and your poor taste have more shitty movies to watch.

I would totally recommend it to anyone. It's a movie that does what a movie is supposed to do, have great story telling. It doesn't have special fx or anything and would have no problem beeing seen on a small screen but it's such a damn good movie, I'm glad I supported it by going out to see it.

I tend to watch more at home these days as well, but I do make the effort to go out and pay full price for quality flicks like this so that there remains some incentive for these projects to continue being funded.

I agree. I'm not saying Dark Knight was not a good movie, but compared to other movies, it's was not as "challenging". Maybe I'm just playing devils advocate, because I never really cared for the Academy Awards or Oscars.

I must say that the entire awards show was shallow and predictable. There were no surprises, it was just your classic liberal circle jerk.
