When I try to shut down OS X it closes out of everything to the point where all that is left is the desktop wallpaper, then it just hangs and doesn't continue to shut down. Is there anyway I can tell what is causing it to hang? Does it keep logs or something?

Yeah, there are logs. I think the console application can display them. If not, they may be in /var/log.
