OS X install help

I have a G4 400 with 512 MB of RAM that has been sitting idle for a while. I have decided to run OS X on it since it meets the requirements.

I tried sticking the install disc for X in and letting it do its thing. It went through the routine fine until it came time to find the hard drive. No amount of coaxing would get the OS to find the hard drive to get going with the install.

I took the drive out and installed it as a slave on my PC. I ran IBMs (that's who made the drive) Drive Fitness Utility on it and got results back that were in the green. I went ahead and had the utillity write 0's to the drive so that there would be no question of a frsh start.

I stick in the OS X CD and get the same result as before.

The drive is the master on the bus by itself. The jumpers are set properly and I have power going to the drive.

Any ideas? I admit to not being a Mac guy but it isn't all that different these days.

Thanks!

Hmmm..This is sticky one that I never really got figured out, but found a workaround. OSX for some reason, has to be installed within the "first 8GB of hard drive space". I got the same thing you did on my G3 233 until I partitioned my 20GB hard drive into two partitions. One @ 7GB, the other @ 13GB. Upon starting the install again, it found the 7GB partition and I installed it there. Give it a try.

OK worth trying, but how do I set partitions on a Mac? Or should I stick it back in the PC and use partition magic to partition it or even format it HFS?

Thanks for the help!

Do you have an OS 9 cd?

I friend of mine here at work showed me the light. I was missing the disk utilities in the drop down early in the install.

I was expecting more of a Windows / RH / Mandrake install routine that points you right to the partion / format utility.

It is up and running now! Let the learning begin!

Thanks for the help!

I installed it over OS 9 yesterday on my G4 here at the office. It is a dual proc 450. In Photoshop 7(the only thing I have had time to test), it runs like a brand new machine!

It is unbelievable how much faster it runs on the dual processor box. I guess the underlying BSD really shines on true multithreading. It is also very sweet to have a Mac that can multitask. So far I am very impressed and look forward to spending more time on my Mac.
