OS X Hacked Onto Generic x86 Hardware

Possible shens, but these fools were slash dotted. And I found some other news about them the group that is working on it. http://www.osx86project.org/

I'm a pretty die-hard mac user, and I don't like seeing the beloved OS X potentially being run on a generic pc. But it was only a matter of time I guess.

edit: I wonder if it actually works how many people will switch from windows to osx.

run on a crap box? it cant get any slower then it allready is, this is a god scend, might actually make it useable

What kind of comment was that? OSX is a piece of software, and "someone's crap box" is a piece of hardware.

What's wrong with that?

Some of us dont like the idea of some apple operating system running on our x86!

😛

Hm... I want to try this on my dell laptop. Nonintegrated graphics should make the GUI run slightly better. Time to find hacked versions 😀.

what a waste of time. from what i've read, apple is officially dropping the IBM CPUs and moving to intel x86 CPUs. which means the ONLY difference between a mac and a PC will be the OS. about time that fruity OS runs on some real hardware 😛

They said that their OS will not work on non-Apple hardware, since it looks for a chip that's onboard Apple's machines. However, as I pointed out in the thread about this a couple of months ago, 99% of the work was done by apple, and all PC fans have to do is crack it. It looks like that's just been done.

It's still not 100% native, as it runs in a VMWARE session. A virtual machine is different than emulation, though, so this isn't the same as running OSX on PearPC. Emulation is much, much slower, because it's running PowerPC code on a X86 chip, while this virtual machine is actually running x86 code.

Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips

Apple has used IBM's PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel's chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said.

...

One advantage Apple has this time: The open-source FreeBSD operating system, of which Mac OS X is a variant, already runs on x86 chips such as Intel's Pentium. And Jobs has said Mac OS X could easily run on x86 chips.

it doesnt allready run on it they had to hack it to make it work

its still in dev right now on specific machines with specific hardware, these guys got it to run on a random lappy

Did anyone get this to work? I dled it but it says the file is not a virtual disk. Other people on the site I got it from have the same problem.

According to reports, even when running under VMware, OS X runs faster on a processor with SSE3 than on the fastest PowerPC!

Where did you get it? Can I have?

I'd probably switch to OSX as the main machine, but definitely dual-boot with Windows for gaming and other Windows XP specific tasks. (specialized school software titles)

Heh, I don't even have the requisite SSE2. Strangely, the original thread implies PearPC is faster than VMware.

though this is interesting i don't think i would ever switch
rumor is that the move to x86 procs from intel is only the first step to get user interest to grow and test out the bugs intel they release OSX for all pc's to compete with windows
