I got my new pc that has no OS(from cybers). I thought my 'burned' Windows XP will run on my new computer, well it doesnt, I could upgrade it and all but for some reason I cant install it. Do I need a system disk(it asks me to put one in but I dont have one).

Someone please help, I've been trying to solve the problem for about 5 hours.

When the WinXP CD-ROM is in, do you have it set to boot to the CD-ROM in the BIOS, instead of hard drive, etc.?

The first thing in the Boot options is CDROM, so I believe it will use the CDROM, I also tried to disable all the other drives except the first one(CDROM), and still didnt work.
I asked Cybers,Asus, about 3other people, and they couldn't fix the problem.

sounds like your CD is not bootable. That means you burned a copy and did not choose to make it a bootable copy.

Here's how to install it. Download a Windows 98Se bootdisk from Bootdisk.com, if you don't have one already:

http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles1/boot98se.exe

Have a floppy ready for it to write the boot files to. Run boot98se.exe and it will create a boot floppy. Boot up with the floppy (make sure your bios is set to boot from floppy).

Choose CDROM support when you boot with it.

It will tell you which drive is the CDROM drive during the floppy bootup (it will create a Ramdrive, so where your CDROm drive would normally be Drive D:, it might be Drive E: with the bootdisk floppy. Just watch the messages.

Once it's done booting, put your XP CD in.

At the A: prompt, type " E: " (assuming that's the drive letter for your cd after booting with the floppy)

Now, type "cd i386" and hit enter

Now, type "winnt"

Of course, the quotation marks above are only for clarification. Do NOT type in the quotation marks!

That's the Dos-based setup command for XP installs. XP will start to install. Remove the floppy.

When I put the CD in my old computer(the one im using), It gives me a option to upgrade or fully install. So i'm not sure if its only a upgrade or not.

Silk I followed your steps and it was setting up the XP cd, but it froze and said the "End Licesne Agreement not found", is there anything I can do from there.

Is that the exact error message? Please post it EXACTLY as you see it. It helps.

Also, do you see the user agreement page? You have to press F8 to accept it.

" Setup cannot find the End User Agreement(EUCA)."
"Setup cannot continue, to quit, press F3."

I didn't see a agreement page.

Can you help me out, I really want to get my computer to work.

Ok, found the answer.

Now, before you start doing what it says in the beginning, listen to me. Ignore the first few paragraphs. Go directly down the page until you see:

Use a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Startup Disk to Partition and Format Your Hard Disk

Here's the page from MS:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326673&sd=RMVP

What you will be doing is FDISKing again and formatting. Follow that section, and
do the fdisk/format using the bootdisk. Then, do the setup of XP again.

You can always convert to NTFS after installing, if that's what you really want.
But for now, you need to FDISK with Large Disk Support and format it as Fat32.

It shouldn't go right to the XP setup IF you are booting from the Floppy disc first.

Make sure your bios is set to boot from Floppy first. Then, it will have no choice but to boot from floppy.

If it STILL keeps going right to the XP setup, then change your boot options so the hard drive does not appear in the list at all. In other words, make your boot options something like:

1. Floppy
2. CDRom
3. Some other device other than hard drive.

Also, make sure your XP CD is not in the drive when you go to boot from the floppy to do the Fdisking. You won't need it for awhile until your done FDISK'ing and formatting.

I'll add your AIM name to my ICQ list (AIM contacts can be seen by ICQ).

Update...

Worked with him via IM.

Used a bootdisk to FDISK his drive (had 4 partitions on it!) Formatted. Xcopied his XP CD files to an I386 folder on his C: drive. Used Smardrv.

He was able to install XP.

I think he had a non-ISO compliant copy of his XP original disc, which was causing folder read errors when installing from the CD. So, moving the files to the hard drive solved that.
