OS Selection

I am about to build a new PC next weekend possibly, and I am planning on getting vista home premium 64-bit. It's worth to get since I'm using core i7 and 6gb ram for build. Should I get vista or wait for windows 7? Is there any problems with vista?

No issues with Vista Ultimate 64bit for me.
But if you do plan on going Win 7, you may as well grab the beta thats floating around and use that until release instead of wasting $$$ on Vista.

The last two Win 7 releases are amazingly stable and complete and dont expire until 3/1/2010. (grab build 7068 or 7077 if you do)
So they will run until the Retail release.

While I typically loathe to use beta software on a production machine, the Windows 7 beta that MS released publically a while back was very stable. Either use a Linux OS or use one of the recent Windows 7 builds to save yourself some money that could be reinvested back into better hardware.

If I was you I would get Windows Vista and Windows 7 version you want and test them making a dual boot system and see what you prefer for your OS. Both of those systems can be installed without a key for 30 days and the you can search for rearming the system which last I remember will allow you to extend your test time to 90 days total. You would just need to split you main hard drive into 2 partitions so you can install one OS per partition installing the older OS first e.g. Windows Vista.

I?m going to agree with some of the other guys. You?re set up in a win/win here. You can grab a copy of the Beta (I?d suggest hitting up a friend with an ISO disc) and run Windows 7 64-bit on your new machine. However, the scheduled end of the Beta is Aug. 1, 2009, so you might want to have a backup (maybe Vista home premium) on hand.

AFIC, Vista is the ME of the NT generation. It's a bloated pile of mistakes and bad ideas that incidentally includes an attempt at an OS, but unless you're willing to go back to XP (my preference), you're stuck with it until Microsoft releases W7, which they claim will be the OS they pretended Vista was supposed to be.

You can try setting it up for dual booting. The safest way to try the W7 beta is to put it on a separate hard drive and switch between them to test W7. If/when you feel secure with it for everyday use, you'll have a backup drive.

My personal rule is not to use any new Microsoft OS until it's been out at least a year, prefererably two. To date, nothing has convinced me to give up XP Pro.

I guess it's just me but I wouldn't run a Beta OS as my main OS. Yes it's a great Beta cus it works with basically everything Vista does but I wouldn't trust my system to a Beta OS. I dual boot Vista64 and W7 64 and prefer to use Vista just because it's more solid to me. You're going to have to get a new OS when the beta ends in August anyways.

The current version of W7 beta runs through 3/01/10. The original ver. 7000 timed out earlier, but ver 7068 definitely goes through march 2010, so people can stop providing inaccurate information now.

Also, I will join the list of people suggesting that your best choice is W7 beta. It is stable and a search of the net will confirm this. You can use it free for almost a year, why not do it.

How about we keep the FUD about Vista down a bit. If you have an instance where something doesn't work under Vista that?s fine to share that. There are a lot of people who have reasons to use XP or even older windows versions in some instances, majority of them, however, is due to the software not the OS. Everything else about second coming of ME is just your opinion which is inaccurate. If you hate Vista so much you should hate W7 as its 99% the same thing, just slightly more optimised for lower end systems and different visuals.

For most things Vista works great and if not as fast as XP in some its a lot more secure.

Saying all that, I would recommend for the OP to try out W7 beta or the RC which apparently should be released soon. There really isn't any reason to pay for an OS which will be superseded soon when there?s a free beta available which works very well.
