OS Removal Question....

Ok, I have Win98SE on the C: Drive (FAT32) and Win2000 on D: Drive (NTFS). I find myself using 2000 99.9999% of the time so I want to remove win98 and free the partition. Is there a way to removethe 98 partition completely and not hose everything? I wouldnt cry if i had to reload it all but I wouldnt be too happy either.

1/25th of a cent (rounded down) paypal to whomever answers 🙂

The only way I know of to uninstall win98 is a format. Once you do that, you lose the NTLDR, which is essential in getting Win2k to boot. You could run the installation program again for Win2k, then choose upgrade, overwriting Win98 and installing Win2k in it's place, then backup what you want out of the old one and format that partition...I guess. You will be able to convert C to NTFS if you want during the install.
If it were me, I'd just backup everything that was important and redo it all. 🙂

I have done the following with success - even using Win2k beta2, beta3, and RC2 and RC2.

PartitionMagic would allow you to flip-flop the partitions, blow off the Win98se, then expand out the 2k partition, but you would have to do a bootsector recovery from a Win2k CD boot. If you are up to snuff about NT4/2k recovery options and you have already made your backups, you may want to give this a try.

This scenario has yet to fail - strong word that "yet".

This worked for me, see if it helps. First of all, create an ERD for Win2K. (emergency repair disk) I know, i know, sounds incredibly heinous an all, but I swear to you the thing has saved my butt countless times. Then, boot to the C: prompt (F8 upon win load) and from root type:

fdisk /mbr (formats the master boot record, removing the info that tells your 'puter where to load it's os from)

Then, boot to your Win2k CD and choose the Repair installation, From ERD option. This should work, and upon loading 2k, delete the 98 directory. Simple as that.

(EDIT cause I can't spell...)
