Anyone go to Ask The HeadHunter? Got some good articles and advice. Although, most of it just seems like total BS. He recommends that before you submit a resume, call the person who is hiring, and talk to them. Then submit your resume. In my last 3 months, I have had ZERO success with actually trying to reach a hiring manager. They are ALWAYS in a meeting.

AT&T Wireless to Cut 1,000 Workers

AT&T Wireless said it will cut 1,000 jobs, or about three percent of the company's employees, this year. Last year, there was a reduction of 2,000 jobs. About 200 workers had their last day Monday, and another 300 are expected to be laid off this month. The cuts are part of an effort to improve efficiency and margins. The company is also consolidating its operations in its main headquarters in Redmond, Washington, New York and parts of New Jersey. Some of the cuts will be offset by new hires, according to AT&T Wireless spokesperson Mark Siegel. (Source: Wall Street Journal)

"Some of the cuts will be offset by new hires" Huh? That never makes any sense

I work for Electric Boat (www.gdeb.com) in Groton, Connecticut. They are going to be having a career fair on July 12 from 8 AM - 1 PM. They have 150 Engineering positions (mainly Electrical, Mechanical) open. They are looking mainly for new grads (0-3 years experience), though they may not discount people with more experience, especially prior navy experience. PM me if there are any questions. Just wanted to pass this along.

Edit: From what I've heard, they are going to be offering jobs on the spot, if they like the candidate.

i just graduated with a BS in CS. job hunt isnt going so great, everything seems to want experience in a lot of really obscure languages, even low level stuff. they are very specific in what they want. etc. or they all want cisco/j2ee/oracle which i dont know.

i have a lot of experience in C/ C++. some in java , sql. i've done a lot of object oriented programming. I've also done some guis in visual c++ and in java. though i wouldnt say i was a master of that, but i can learn quickly. i'm great with lisp and scheme though i am not sure of too many companies that code in that. i've done some programming in the linux kernel, and with network sockets creating a client and server. school taught me all the computer science fundamentals and algorithms that are a good foundation for any language.

i am total techie geek, and can work with basically any hardware you throw at me. been doing that since i was 6 , though apparently there is no demand for that either.

i've worked in IT before, computer manufacturing, support. answered calls what have you. backed up servers in unix. and the usual linux / windows knowledge anyone on anandtech would have. through my current part time job i also have experience repairing and supporting POS systems running PCverse and Universe software.

anyways, i've been looking around and jobs are hard to get. i am in the los angeles area and i really just want 30-35 a year just to get some more experience and well just to be able to live on my own.

Link?

I'm only entry-level Visual Studio/Java programmer, but I know a few guys who are always looking in the area (hell, who isn't).

--------------

As an aside, the wife and I are attempting to move out to Oregon this year - she has some family out there and does retail management, so it should be easy for her to find a job.

HOWEVER, I still need to find something for this to work. Been doing PC/server administration support in an NT environment for the past 5 years, doing a little dev work for the company. Just got a degree in Information Systems, specifically client-server programming, and looking for a company I can start as a tech at, or entry-level programmer, and get more into programming there.

Resume here.

What area are you moving to?
The current state government has been making things tough for businesses. And the unemployment rate here is one of the highest in the nation.
There are a ton of tech places to work in Portland. Intel for one. But the job market in the area is really bad. There are job postings, but it's going to be very competitive. There are a lot of unemployed programmers in Portland.

If you can make it on her salary alone, you might want to consider furthering your education while the economy still sucks. Eugene and Portland have decent universities with graduate programs in Computer Science.

Anyone needing to work in San Diego can contact me if you have a degree in EE or CS or have experience in QA, software testing etc...
I have a friend who is a Technical Recruiter that can help you find a job. It will most likely be temp first but you can usually get rolled over to a permanent position providing everything works out.

If you like, you can email your resume here My email and I will forward it. I have helped a few friends looking for work so far so if you have no work this is your chance.

Good luck everyone.

Sounds like you should be able to get work, especially in the L.A. area. Myself, my specialty is Foxpro programming and I'm having a real hard time finding ANYTHING anywhere near my house which is in Berkeley, CA. But Dice searches routinely turn up Foxpro stuff in the L.A. area. If I lived where you are I'd probably be working, is my impression. I have a piddly trickle coming in via a part time on call thingo that could disappear any moment. And the unemployment, of course. That DOES help.

You'd probably hate talking to job seekers on the phone who you didn't know jack about if you were a hiring manager. Put yourself in their shoes. I hope this doesn't sound like sacrilege. Right place at the right time is not often talking to a hiring manager who hasn't even seen your resume.

Hello Mr. Jin,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am technical project manager at Microsoft, who is responsible for harvesting new talent, just like yourself. We have several intern and full time positions open, and would really like to see if your qualifications are what we are looking for. I see that you can make a GPA calculator. Great news! MS is going to realease a new educational software called "MS GPA Calculator 4.0", and we could really use your technical expertise. Infact, I am very confident that you will be a shoe in for the job.

Please, call me at the number below as soon as you can. I will wait for your call.

Thank You.

Ok I am just joking. But the point is, if anyone interested actually did see your post, is that how you would want to come across, saying that you have no skills?

Do you have a part time job or no job? ABC news is looking to do stories on the "underemployed."

I have noticed that specialized skills are becoming strongly in demand within certain sectors.

Problem is that due to the economic conditions, all companies are being more selective and want the perfect match. They are instructing the HH to filter out resumes that do not have everything inon the wish list, even if the wish list contains things that may not be relevant.

3-5 years ago, the missing items would not be a roadblock to getting a foot in the door, so you could present and sell your talents.

Now the missing item is putting your neck on a chopping block.

check with some of the large defense companies in your area. Many will have an internship if you have kept out of trouble.
You will need to cold call on their HR section. Go in person, do not mail in the resume.

Practive your sales pitch on a couple of people who are professionals before hand.

I think the job market is getting worse. I graduated almost one year ago and have yet to find a full-time position. My daily net searches seem to be providing less and less matches , in terms of what is out there for non-senior positions.

Frankly, I don't have much faith that the IT industry will ever pick up again. Whose to say that those jobs that went overseas won't come back or that companies will try to get along without as many IT people like they are doing now?
